Windows ME Defragmenter does not work
I have started the defragmenter multiple times and the %-finished gauge has
never gone beyond 0%, although the defragmenter symbol indicates activity. I can hear it accasionally accessing the hard drive and see the organge light go on and off for short bursts (up to 5 seconds). I have left it overnight a couple of times but with no success. I just turned the defragmenter off after 24hours of continuous running (still at 0% finished). After doing so I got the following error messag "An error has ocurred. Filename: IFSMGR (04) + 000157D4, Error: OE : 0028 : C02BFD30, Hit any key to continye or CTRL ALT DEL to restart." Hitting any key did not help, so I hit CTRL ALT DEL and then got the following error message: "Error : 0D:0028:C186SB28". I had to make a forced shutdown. |

Windows ME Defragmenter does not work
Thanks for your help Mart.
My problems started when Windows ME would not run at all. I could access DOS and was able to see that the directory- and file- structures seemed intact. I ended up reinstalling Windows ME but it still would not start in unprotected mode. So I used the step wise option and was able start up Windows ME when Symantec/Norton was deactivated. Later it also ran without deactivating Norton (i.e. a regular startup). I then ran into problems with defrag as described below. Follwing Mart´s suggestion I then ran defrag in Safe Mode. I did this twice. The first time Scandisk had restarted 10 times after being stopped by some " other application writing to the disk" (still in Safe Mode). The second time (still in Safe Mode) Scandisk ran through and so did defrag. I´m now in the proces of running Sandisk and defrag in unprotected mode to see if it will work. Are there any other suggestions? What is the IFSMGR? I searched for the file but could not find it. Mike "Mart" wrote: Has this only recently started to happen and if so, have you made any alterations (new hardware/software etc) to your setup? Try running Defrag (and Scandisk) in Safe Mode and see if either/both run without major issues. Your later error may or may not be related to the defrag issue, but see "Fatal Exception Error Message Occurs During Setup" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273918/en-us and "ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down Correctly" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273017/en-us for example, and other IFSMGR issues on the MS KB Mart "Mike S" Mike wrote in message ... Windows ME Defragmenter does not work
Symantec/Norton
Better known as the Win Me destroyer - not that Norton is much better on any other operating system. There really should be a class action suit against Symantec for passing off their bloatware system destroyer as an anti-virus product. What is the IFSMGR? I searched for the file but could not find it. This file, with many others, is built in to vmm32.vxd when Win Me is first installed. IFSMGR.VXD is a virtual device driver and is the (Microsoft) Installable File System ManaGeR. In other words is used when reading and writing files Back to Mart. -- Mike Maltby Mike S wrote: Thanks for your help Mart. My problems started when Windows ME would not run at all. Windows ME Defragmenter does not work
Mike M wrote :-
Back to Mart. Thanks Mike, and why am I not too surprised that you didn't take it further? g Amongst the chaff, Mike S wrote that not only did he have Norton installed (and I think Mike M has well alluded to the potential catastrophe of having Norton products installed on a WinMe system) but somewhat more worrying is the spectre, where you "ended up reinstalling Windows ME" - which I take to mean that you reinstalled it over itself. In other words it was NOT a clean (fresh) install - which is very likely to have caused a 'version soup' - with all of its attendant problems. If that is the case, then I personally wouldn't even bother attempting to try and 'fix' things. I would be far more inclined to cut my losses and save myself an awful lot of time and effort by starting over with a completely fresh install - assuming you have all the 'original' installation disks etc. Just try to recover any important (personal) data from your hard disk before you start. I suspect that you may have an OEM version of WinMe - in which case follow your User Manual's instructions for a 'factory fresh' install (WITHOUT NORTON). However, If you've got MS copy of the WinMe (retail) CD, then start by reading the following instructions :- "Windows Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271673/en-us Also, be sure that you've still got a copy of the 25 digit product key, before you start. Windows ME Defragmenter does not work
Thanks Mike, and why am I not too surprised that you didn't take it
further? g Thick head, stuffed nose, chesty cough and bronchitis is "the why"? Result, little time spent anywhere other than in bed, 5-10 mins at a keyboard is about all I can manage at the moment. Also, be sure that you've still got a copy of the 25 digit product key, before you start. If not make a copy of it from your existing system before formatting. OP can do this using either Belarc's Adviser or similar or using Regedit and copying the key from the data for the string "ProductKey" located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion -- Mike Mart wrote: Mike M wrote :- Back to Mart. Windows ME Defragmenter does not work
I ran into this same problem some time back. The solution that worked for me
is to close all programs running in the background EXCEPT Explorer and Systray. Works every time! -- 2C "Mike S" wrote: I have started the defragmenter multiple times and the %-finished gauge has never gone beyond 0%, although the defragmenter symbol indicates activity.
