Default MS GDI + Detection Tool

I received an update notice to download this program. Can someone
explain what its purpose is, and how important to have?
Thanks

Go to Windows Update and you will see that there are two things to
download......and each of them gives an explanation why.

I haven't done so yet......anyone else downloaded them?? I prefer to wait
and let you guys test them first, lol!!

The *update* is a tool. It checks whether you have any of the vulnerable
software installed, then registers itself so that you don't get repeatedly
urged to download and run it. As I don't have any here, I don't know exactly
what it does if you *do* have affected software installed.

I very, very much doubt the tool itself will cause any problems and, as it
identifies whether your machine is, or is not, at risk to a newly-uncovered
security vulnerability, I strongly advise you and anyone else to download
and run it.

Hey, Figgs!

No problems yet with the IE6.0sp1 patch. As for the GDI tool, run it! It's
not messing with the system, it's just checking if you have vulnerable
software versions installed.

I am trying to install both of them......but for some odd reason they refuse
to download.

I have had a lot of problems with webpages not loading and I think it is
ZAPro's settings that are causing it. Changed a few of them and now getting
99% of the problem websites.....ones that I access every day, as in GMail,
Pogo.....odd.

I will try rebooting and getting the new ones.

Yahoo, Figgs? I thought you were the one who didn't try software until the
rest of us had confirmed it was ok?

Anyway, this is what you should do (for future ref). Quite difficult on true
BB to stop the download before it's complete, but if you can't do that, then
once it has downloaded (whether or not it installed successfully), open the
Windows Update.log file in C:\Windows. Scroll down to the bottom and look
for the last (or if two downloads, the last two) entry *http:\* that ends in
..exe or .cab.

For instance, the GDI-tool url is (in Windows Update.log):

http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...81285bfd3f.exe

Paste it into IE's address bar, hit Go and it'll DL for saving. You can
still do this, of course, as the link is still in the log (quite apart from
above).

The IE6.0 update is available for DL to disk via the Windows Update Catalog
and via the *Read more* link anyway, but the GDI-tool (last night at least)
was not available elsewhere (you couldn't even find the KB article by
searching Microsoft.com).

Of course, it still might not install, but it's more likely to.
