I have the same problem as Crystal. (see copy of email

width of the monitor, so it is beyond where I can reach it
with the mouse. I have a 17" monitor.
I went to this site (http://www.s3graphics.com/) and it
says "earlier drivers are obsolete", so I don't know how
to find what I need to download.

Subject: Windows 98 is only displaying 16 colours
From: "Joe727" nospam.nospam.nospam Sent: 9/25/2004

If you just reinstalled Windows, or you cannot change to
256, 16 bit, or 32
bit color, you probably need to reinstall your video card
drivers.

To reinstall your video card drivers, you need to know the
exact make and
model of your video card in order to install the
correct/updated drivers.

There are several ways to determine what kind of video
card you have.

1. Check the manual that came with your PC.

2. You can open your PC tower to look at the video card
and note the name
and numbers printed on it.

3. You can download and run this free program. It might be
able to
determine what kind of video card you have:

Everest Home Edition

http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?
pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3

To find the Everest info you need to post, run the Everest
program, and
click the + sign next to Computer
on the left side of your screen then click Summary.

Then Right click the information on the *right* side of
your screen and
select Copy. You can then paste the information in Notepad
or paste it
directly to this newsgroup.

Everest will tell you a lot about what's inside your PC.
In addition to
telling us the *Brand and Model Number* of your computer,
please post back
the information Everest reports for your:

Motherboard

CPU

Chipset

Display PCI/AGP Video

Display GPU

This information will assist us in finding the correct
video drivers, and
directing you to the video card manufacturer's website so
you can download
and install them.

*** IMPORTANT *** Remember to tell us the *Brand and Model
Number* of your
computer which is printed on your PC case or is listed in
the manual that
came with your computer.

I reformatted my computer after a critical error. Windows
was reinstalled but I can only get up 16 colours instead
of the 256.
As a novice and only a casual user I would appreciate step
by step instructions please.
Thankyou
Crystal age 13.

Hi - first download and install the latest drivers for your VIA chipset,
then reboot.

VIA Hyperion chipset driver Version - 4.53 which is available he

http://www.viaarena.com/Default.aspx?PageID=2

Then download the dirvers for your video card.

395drv Savage4 (394-398) Drivers which are available he

http://ranger.s3graphics.com/swlib/

Create a folder on your desktop called Video Drivers.

Download the video drivers to it. Right click and extract the files to the
*same folder*, or extract it using one of the free zip utilities from the PC
World Magazine website:

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...id,6531,00.asp

**If you already have the drivers extracted in a folder you can find, then
start here.**

Since the drivers do not have a self-installer so you will have to follow
these installation instructions for Example 2 or Example 3:

DRIVER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.

Start the "Display" applet program.

Select the "Settings" page, push the "Change Display Type" button.

Push the "Change" button in the "Adapter Type" area.

Push the "Have Disk" button and press "OK".

Specify the path to the new driver and press the ENTER
key:

Example 2: Type in the name of the directory where you copied
the drivers, either on your local hard drive or
on a network share.
(***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created
on your Desktop***)

Example 3: If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are,
choose the "Browse..." button are find them.
(***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created
on your Desktop***)

The "Select Device" dialog box will appear. Select the adapter that
corresponds to the one you installed in your machine and click OK.

Windows 95 (or Windows 98) will copy the display drivers to the proper
directories on your system.

Continue choosing Close until asked to restart your machine from the
"Systems Settings Change" dialog box.

After the system has restarted, you can go back into the Display
applet and select alternate screen resolutions and color depths.

Make sure you *temporarily* disable your anti-virus program since it can
interfere with the video drivers installation process. Reboot your
computer.

Joe,
Thank you for your information and help. I installed the
VIA chipset drivers, but I get an error message that says
the Savage 4 Driver is not compatible with my computer and
that I should not install it, I don't know what the
Display "applet" program is, Display Properties still says
(Unknown Monitor) on (Unknown Device), 16 colors is still
my only choice, the screen is still 640 x 480 pixels and I
can't change it.

What is the brand and model of your computer? Compaq, Dell, HP, etc.? The
Display Applet is the Display icon in the Control Panel.

You need to ask the person who gave you the computer several things unless
you want to check them yourself. This link has the manual for your
motherboard which describes how to do the checking for item #1.

http://www.biostar-usa.com/docsmain.asp

ftp://ftp.biostar-usa.com/manuals/M7VKL/M7VKLmanual.pdf

The manual is a .pdf document, so you will need Adobe Reader.

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

1 - Is the onboard video (in the BIOS) enabled?

2 - Was a separate video card installed at one time?

3 - Does he or she have the CD that came with the motherboard? It has all
the drivers.

You can also try the video drivers available at Biostar - the company that
made your motheboard - Biostar M7VKL. Scroll down to video.

http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdownloads.asp?model=m7vkl

Follow the same instructions about creating a Video folder on the desktop in
my previous post. Click the Setup icon that looks like a computer.
