Windows ME errors and fialures

I keep getting an error 'explorer has caused an error in
unknown and will shut down' etc when I double click my
computer. When I try again it works fine. Also when I
try and run control panel from the start menu the computer
seems to hang and the start bar freezes. But I can still
double click on my computer and run it from there. There
are a few other problems with it as well. does anyone
know how to reinstall ME so it just repairs what is
damaged and not what I have already installed.

Your problems could be the result of being the host for an unwanted parasite
possibly SafeGuardProtect (see
http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/s...ardprotect.asp).

Graham Womark, recently posted in the Win Me General NGs how he resolved his
problem as follows:
"Do all this in Safe Mode
Make a Restore Point - just in case it gets worse.
Using Regedit, search for 'Safeguard'. Make a note of the dll name.
Run BHODemon (http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm).
Look for the same dll name The 'Details' key should give you more
information about when the entries were loaded. Disable the registry entry.
Search your hard drive for the dll file (should be in Windows\System). Rename
it and a similar named lib file (possibly pdf.dll) - change the extensions.
Reboot, cross your fingers and try 'My Computer' "

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
