Windows ME corrupt files

My desktop and other applications have gotten "corrupt" with windows media
player icons, when I try to open a desktop application it automatically tries
to open windows media player, not all programs have gotten corrupt, just
about 90%.

Begin by using System Restore to revert to an earlier date when such
problems did not occur.

Then Increase the Windows Icon Cache Size
