Don't install W98 to a partition or disk. Instead, install it into a
virtual machine using the Microsoft VM

I re-read the original post and see the OP wants to use Win98 to run
diagnostic software to test older H/W so even though running win98 in a
virtual machine is not a bad idea, it really won't work to do what the OP
wants... a win98 native install would be needed

In addition to the good suggestion of using a 3rd party boot manager

there is one other possibility...
and that is simply installing Win98 on another drive entirely

then selecting which drive to boot from in the bios...

*providing of course the bios has that capability*

To avoid a possible disaster I'd disconnect the XP drive while performing
the installation of win98

If the devices work with that PC running W98, there is a very good chance
they will work properly when W98 is running as a VM. In fact, most of my
use of W98 and NT in a VM is so that I can access devices that no longer
work when running with XP or Vista.

Anything for which an XP driver hasn't been written: some printers
(perhaps; I don't know of any - XP has drivers for many old dot-matrix
printers!), scanners, cameras (especially pre-USB ones), a _few_ TV
sticks, some mp3 players, some professional test equipment ...

Actually, what the OP wanted '9x for was to run the diagnostic software,
but if that is '9x only, I guess there's a fair chance that the
equipment to which it relates is too. Though it would be worth checking
whether XP versions of the said software exist.

If he does install XP on his system as it is now - with an NTFS
partition and a FAT32 one, such that the '9x installation will only
"see" the FAT one - then presumably it would do something to the boot
record of the HD that makes it always boot into the FAT/9x system, i. e.
will bugger the XP booting (though not the contents of the XP
partition)?

Default How to install WIN 98 after XP

Using a third party boot manager would be the easiest way to accomplish
what you want. If you want to do this without a third party boot
manager just make the E drive the Active Partition and you will (should)
be able to then install Windows 98 on it.

After Windows 98 is up and running then you can then move the files
needed to boot XP (ntldr, NTDETECT.COM & Boot.ini) to the root of the
new active partition (E) and then write the NT boot sector to the
partition and you will be able to boot to either operating system when
the computer is booted. This is a bit easier to do if you have a floppy
disk drive, if things go wrong you can easily boot to Windows XP with an
NT boot floppy.

On my notebook i have installed WIN XPSP2 on partotion C(NTFS). Then I have
created partition E on the same hard disk(D is CD drive), and format it to

The problem for me is how to install WIN 98 to E drive, without deleting WIN
XP, and with boot menu to choose which operating system want to use. I need
to install WIN 98 for diagnostic software of some old devices that won´t work
on WIN XP.
I was thinking to solve this problem in next steps:
- create an image of operating system(image of WIN XP) on NTFS file
systemwith some backup and image creating software
- format C partition to FAT 32 file system
- install first WIN 98 on C partition
- restore image of WIN XP (which is created in NTFS) to E drive which is on
FAT 32
Is it possible to do it, and will the image of WIN XP work on FAT 32 system?
The crucial thing is to maintain the WIN XP on it original state because of
many software installed on it.
Can you please help me to solve this problem with some suggestions?
I would be thankful

In my case. an old (but very good) slide scanner that runs off the parallel
port, a plotter that cuts stencils, a MIDI device that uses the joystick
port, and a digital control module.
