Windows Update
I recently reloaded WinME and can not re-install windows
Service Pack 6. I have the resume install Icon on my desktop and if I try to access it I get "A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You meed to restart your computer to complete that installation before running Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close" I can get rid of the error by removing the wininit.ini file from my system. By then resuming Windows Update Setup, I get another error of "Setup was unable to download information about available installation sites." I do not have a proxy server and have a hard time believing that the windows sites are not available? What other problems may be causing this? |

Did you uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME, if not then you may be
left with problems as you will have what is called version soup. Have a look at the following sites to see if you can sort out your problems. I now have come full circle and now have the same trouble
I had for the reason I re-installed windows. When starting windows I get an error message, "A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You may need to restart your computer to complete that installation before Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close" I followed exactly the instructions found on http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm including using IE6remove.zip as instructed. The re-install of windows seemed normal and all was well until I tried to install service pack 6. I could not install it and found the wininit.ini file to be causing problems including system restore to stop working. I had this error message; A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running internet explorer setup. Setup will now close." and used this procedure; http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309314 It worked up until the install where it seem to intall but at the end gave me an error that none of the components have been installed??? In addition to the error message of "A pervious installation has pending work..." appearing ever time I start WinME I now get the additional error; Error loading p2csocks_1014.dll The system cannot find the file specified. -----Original Message----- Did you uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME, if not then you may be left with problems as you will have what is called version soup. You may have some registry corruption.... Try this Start|Run type SCANREG /FIX click OK - Windows will reboot Then check for the existence of a WININIT.INI file, and rename it if it's there - have a look at it in Notepad, and paste the contents in your reply. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Connolly" wrote in message ... Thanks,
SCANREG /FIX did not solve the problem. I renamed the file and opened it in notepade. The following is the content. You may have a virus/spyware hijack
download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling viruses are not present on your PC http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe - update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files. Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the CoolWebSearch hijacker. http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html Use CWShredder, the removal tool: http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from your system. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Connolly" wrote in message ... Noel,
I ran Stinger and it came up with nothing. Although CWShredder did seem to to find something. I have ad- aware, Spybot, and AOL Spyware protection they have all found nothing, and McAfee Virus check comes up clean. After running CWShredder in safe mode I am still getting the RUNDLL error, "Error loading p2esocks_1014.dll The system cannot find the file specified. and this error msg as well, "A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You may need to restart your computer to complete that installation before Internet Explorer Setup. Setup will now close" Also Wininit.ini is always present after rebooting the system even with file restore disabled. (not sure if this is relevent?) further suggestions? (I am off to work now, will look at replies later, but thanks for your help so far) -----Original Message----- You may have a virus/spyware hijack download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling viruses are not present on your PC http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe - update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.
