Noel and Mart, I want to thank you for continuing to help
me.
Wordpad search shows the following:
WORDPAD.INF in WINDOWS\INF

Ver 5.0.1691.1
Created March 24, 2003, 11:42:18
Modified June 08, 2000, 17:00:00

Hope this info will tell you something.

Do you know why the WORDPAD.INF and WORDPAD.EXE "Created"
dates can be later than the "Modified" dates?

Another question-Mart previously suggested I verify
OPTIONS\Install sub-folder contained the proper version of
mfc42.dll which I did. I just did a search for mfc42.dll in
WINDOWS\INF Setup Instructions and did not find it. Is this
the right finding?

Just a thought, but it may be worth checking the

version number for
WordPad itself -
Do a Search for "Wordpad"
The Wordpad.exe file should be in the C:\Program

Files\Accessories
folder, 200KB, dated 8th June 2000, v5.0.1691.1
Any other Wordpad.exe files should be deleted
You should also have
WORDPAD.CHM
WORDPAD.CNT
WORDPAD.HLP
Wordpad (no extension) - this is the shortcut in the

Programs folder.
r-click on it, select Properties, and make sure that

it's configured
properly.... the Target is "C:\Program

Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe"
(INCLUDING the quotes!)
if there's anything else in the 'Target' bot, then

delete it.

The created date is the date on which the file was created *on your
system* - the Modified date speaks for itself (I assume that you installed
ME on March 24 2003???)

Everything else looks normal to me - whether you need the extra shortcuts or
not is up to you.

Sorry - I'm out of ideas, now

Job, like Noel, I'm pretty much out of ideas too.

However, as a final WAG, try extracting a fresh copy of wordpad.exe from
WIN_17.CAB in the Widows\Options folder and put it on your desktop. Then try
running it from there.

Just a very, very long shot.

BTW - don't worry that mfc42.dll doesn't appear in the contents of the .inf
file. It's actually called-up by the .exe file and not the .inf file. Which
is one of the things (I think) that the Filemon - Regmon tool (which Alan
mentioned earlier) *should* help you to confirm/determine.

Hey again Mart,
I will try your suggestion after I review KB 129605 and KB
265371 to insure I understand how to extract and copy the
..exe to the desktop. Even if it doesn't help, thanks to
you, I will learn something new.

May be a while til I can give you feedback as I'm trying to
prepare my system (and myself) to change out my hard drive.

Mart,
I notice that if I open WIN_17.CAB and right click on
wordpad.exe I get a drop down box that has Copy and Extract
options. Can these be used in lieu of KB 129605
instructions?

I hope to quit pestering you soon.

There is a WORDPAD.INF file too, associated Noel.

Also, it pulls a couple of .dll's (including

but I'm not sure
which others.

Just a thought, but it may be worth checking the
version number for
WordPad itself -
Do a Search for "Wordpad"
The Wordpad.exe file should be in the C:\Program
Files\Accessories
folder, 200KB, dated 8th June 2000, v5.0.1691.1
Any other Wordpad.exe files should be deleted
You should also have
WORDPAD.CHM
WORDPAD.CNT
WORDPAD.HLP
Wordpad (no extension) - this is the shortcut in

the
Programs folder.
r-click on it, select Properties, and make sure

that
it's configured
properly.... the Target is "C:\Program
Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe"
(INCLUDING the quotes!)
if there's anything else in the 'Target' bot, then
delete it.

In some cases, yes - but in some cases, no
It depends on where you're trying to put the file, and whether the file
and/or location are monitored by System File Protection.

Best thing is to do it using the 'approved' tools. - that way everyone knows
what's happening.

Mart,
I notice that if I open WIN_17.CAB and right click on
wordpad.exe I get a drop down box that has Copy and Extract

I hope to quit pestering you soon.

Job, like Noel, I'm pretty much out of ideas too.

However, as a final WAG, try extracting a fresh copy of

wordpad.exe from
WIN_17.CAB in the Widows\Options folder and put it on your

desktop. Then try
running it from there.

Just a very, very long shot.

BTW - don't worry that mfc42.dll doesn't appear in the

contents of the .inf
file. It's actually called-up by the .exe file and not the

.inf file. Which
is one of the things (I think) that the Filemon - Regmon

tool (which Alan
mentioned earlier) *should* help you to confirm/determine.
