Same Type of Problem with both Floppy Drive & CD Rom Drive!!!
Hi,
My cousin asked me to repair his Compaq Presario 1060 laptop (Windows 95) which developed two problems at the same time!!! One of the two problems has to do with the floppy disk drive which suddenly has trouble reading floppy disks. The other problem (started around the same time as the floppy drive problem) has to do with the CD rom drive. That too has trouble reading CD rom files!!! Note: Using it's external power supply, which I had tested under load (AOK), the problems still exist. Note: This laptop was not damaged by a storm. The hard disk drive works just fine. Is there something that could have effected both the floppy drive and the CD rom drive, but not effect the HDD? Thanks in advance, Brad Before you type your password, credit card number, etc., be sure there is no active keystroke logger (spyware) in your PC. |

floppy disk cdrom have a common/similar operation,
both require a external object to be inserted that then is picked up by a spindle, aligned with the read/write heads, spun and read If the pc were dropped, or otherwise shocked the heads could be out of alignment If the pc were kept in a dirty environment dust n dirt could enter the slots and mask the read/write heads the spindles may have enough dirt that the disk.cd is not centered properly so the tracks do not pass over the heads stepper motors burn out dust in bearings changes rotational speed often a can of compressed air is only needed -- - Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Super Antispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.activescan.com Panda online AntiSpyware Scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/spyware/test/ Catalog of removal tools (1) http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Catalog of removal tools (2) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/n...aspx?CID=40387 Trouble Shooting guide to Windows http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Cool Web Shredder http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters _ "Brad" wrote in message ... Almost,
I think you missed that it is a laptop. It seems highly unlikely that both drives (probably swappable drives) would quit functioning at the same time for the reasons you stated. I think it more likely there is some other hardware problem or possibly a system problem. I just don't know enough about laptops to comment knowledgeably however. Mine has XP and a fixed CDRom that works when I put a disk in it G. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "AlmostBob" wrote in message ... floppy disk cdrom have a common/similar operation, both require a external object to be inserted that then is picked up by a spindle, aligned with the read/write heads, spun and read If the pc were dropped, or otherwise shocked the heads could be out of alignment If the pc were kept in a dirty environment dust n dirt could enter the slots and mask the read/write heads the spindles may have enough dirt that the disk.cd is not centered properly so the tracks do not pass over the heads stepper motors burn out dust in bearings changes rotational speed often a can of compressed air is only needed -- - Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Super Antispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.activescan.com Panda online AntiSpyware Scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/spyware/test/ Catalog of removal tools (1) http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Catalog of removal tools (2) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/n...aspx?CID=40387 Trouble Shooting guide to Windows http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Cool Web Shredder http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters _ "Brad" wrote in message ... presario 1060 has internal floppy and cdrom drives and
1 or 2 gb harddrive in what is a very large case for a laptop, not swappable drives, they were shipped in the beginning of the production run with win 95, giving an estimate of age. both drives with access to dirt n grot have similar failures at the same time, and no other in common, separate mobo connectors, pws supply connection, physical location in the case, and they are masked from each other the OP only stated that the pc was not damaged by storm, that leaves flood fire plague and act of war that arent excluded. since the pc can be bought for $25 approx on ebay, it is not really worth spending any more time on it than a can of compressed air cleaner -- - Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://www.safer-networking.org AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Super Antispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/ Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.activescan.com Panda online AntiSpyware Scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/virus_info/spyware/test/ Catalog of removal tools (1) http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Catalog of removal tools (2) http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/n...aspx?CID=40387 Trouble Shooting guide to Windows http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Cool Web Shredder http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters _ "Ron Badour" wrote in message ...
