Default Repeating Windows Update

I just tried the other newsgroup again and now my ISP shows 12 messages in
it. They are all timestamped after I joined the group. Is this normal or
what setting do I have wrong?

I tried the "microsoft.public.windowsupdate" newsgroup which my ISP
listed but it showed ZERO messages??

Try again, I see well in excess of 10,000 posts. If the Usenet news

server
you are using doesn't carry the group then access it directly using
Microsoft's news server (msnews.microsoft.com). Alternatively use the web
interface (yuk) (http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?).

No, not normal but probably an indication that your ISP does not properly
carry the Windows Update newsgroup. I've already suggested how to solve the
problem with your ISP's news server and that is to use the Microsoft news
server (msnews.microsoft.com) instead. Alternatively the web interface for
which I posted a link.

Your ISP may not be carrying a complete feed, or you may have bunged up
the initial download... but regardless, the best way to access these
groups, as Mike suggested, is to start a new NewsAccount in OE with
msnews.microsoft.com as the NewsServer.... horse's mouth and all that.
