Default 3 problems with Winme

After booting up the password wndow comes up - how do I get rid of this?

The system crashes on shutdown - gets stuck on the desktop screen minus the
icons.

Defrag won't work - gets to 2% of checking disk for errors then keeps
starting same process over and over.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Default 3 problems with Winme

1) In order to reset/bypass the password option see :-
"How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at
Startup"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;152104

When it comes to setting up again, then if you no longer want a password,
enter a name but DO NOT enter any password at all, then click OK. DO NOT
"Cancel".

BTW - a 'quick' solution is to delete (or better still rename and delete
when successful) any .pwl files in your \Windows folder

2) Take a look at Jim Eshelman's excellent troubleshooting site. The
following two URL's link directly to articles on WinME shutdown problems:
http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnme.htm
http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm

3) Start by trying to run Defrag in Safe Mode. If you find it runs ok then
you could try downloading and installing ScanDefrag
v5.2.

This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to
these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities
through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Defrag (and
Scandisk) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already
experiencing.

You can get ScanDefrag at either of the two sites below - and be sure to
read the associated notes for setting it up:
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2...efrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

HTH and good luck
