Default Possible UPS Power Mgt Conflict

Only after installing CyberPower UPS Mgt app ( shuts down computer after x
minutes on battery, etc.) do I get daily a Blue "There's been an Error"
screen that requires Re-boot and generates the Desktop Recovery screen.
Are solutions for this likely conflict ever possible or do you just have to
get another brand of UPS?;
A prior Conext UPS application caused no issue.
I'm contacting CyberPower too but don't know whether a Windows expert or UPS
expert will have best suggestion. As always, Many Thanks!

Hi Craig......

I have used CyberPower for 3 years and never have a blue screen. However, I
do not use the software to shut the computer down because I was advised not
to by someone here.

CyberPower is an excellent company to deal with. My UPS got blown by a
surge and subsequently my computer took a bit of a hit. There are no
warnings when the thing is dead!!

I am also using APC which is not quite as expensive......but no software on
that one either. WinME is a tad touchy with that sort of thing, I
understand.

Thanks, Heather. Sorry I neglected to include the Blue Screen Error Msg
starts with "File name: IFSMGR (04) + 0000E8BB Error";
Anyone recognize the IFSMGR for clues?
Have Deleted the CyberPower App to prove that's the cause but without it the
back-up battery will run to "0" and I don't know if the computer can be
damaged when the Battery Power Drops to a certain Low Level.
Any add-on thoughts from anyone is appreciated!

Of course battery power reported by the computer drops to
zero when the apps is removed. That does not mean the UPS
battery is discharging.

Meanwhile, the UPS connects computer directly to AC mains
when not in battery backup mode. Its a dirty little secret
they forget to mention so that you 'wish' the UPS is doing
things only claims by urban myths. IOW battery state has no
affect on computer when AC mains power is OK.

Also computer must work just fine even if incandescent lamps
are at less than 40% intensity. Computer either works 100%, or
shuts itself off due to low voltage. No damage results.

Did you remove drivers for the previous UPS before
installing current UPS drivers?

BTW, those errors are why so many were using Windows NT (now
called Windows XP) before and when Windows 98 came out.
Stability of an ME machine may be traceable to bad drivers AND
an OS that permits those bad drivers to crash the OS. Your
test with UPS software removed should be useful information.
What does Device Manager report? But unfortunately, ME
starves us for facts meaning solution will be mostly trial and
error.

Windows ME suffers from its legacy as a derivative of DOS.
To run programs simultaneously, ME needed a sort of filter so
that each DOS and Windows program could access hardware
without crashing the adjacent prograsm. Part of this process
is the IFSMGR program. It takes DOS calls from an application
program and directs them accordingly.

However problems with newer devices such as USB sometimes
means the IFSMGR file must be upgraded. Search the Microsoft
database for what may be your necessary upgrade file.

Of course this has nothing to due with UPS operation or how
UPS provides power to the computer's power cord.

Updated versions of ifsmgr.vxd for Win Me include:
v4.9.3002 which forms part of hotfix 273017 which is freely available from
the Windows Update site where it is referred to as " Windows IDE Hard
Drive Cache ". (KB273017 - "ScanDisk Runs Even Though Windows Shut Down
Correctly" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=273017)), and,
v4.90.3003 which can be obtained by calling Microsoft Support (KB301540 -
"CreateFile Improperly Returns ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS if the Drive Is Locked
and the File Did Not Exist" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=301540))

I am unaware of any other version having been released for use with Win
Me.

Thanks for the info, Craig. I was warned not to use it and you have proven
that warning to be valid. If I am leaving the house for any period of time,
I usually shut down my computer. My husband has absolutely no clue on how
to do that, so don't want him to have a heart attack if the UPS starts
beeping....lol.

We happen to live in an area that gets a lot of power surges and drops, so
am quite happy with both of the UPS units I have. CyberPower in particular
is more of a *power leveller*.

Cheers....Heather in the Great White North

Thank you, Mike. I ave Saved this info but will first try a suggestion from a
2nd CyberPower tech I lucked into (was in left-field with 1st tech) ; FYI to
Heather: sending me a serial cable (came with USB) and suggested I use their
320SL model software which they regard as a work-around for an Admitted 98/Me
conflict. My NOD32 AV was Freezing on loading, too, so if all goes well I'll
adopt the work-around. Layman like me wouldn't have known the (ie) hotfix
273017 Or KB301540 I saw in a K-base Search would be appropriate here. Many
Thanks again. Will advise of outcome. Craig

Thanks for the heads up, Craig. I am using a newer one that they sent
me.....Model 625 AVR. But still don't bother with the software. I must say
that they are a super company to deal with.

Cheers.....Heather
