Bootup with a startup floppy. If you don't have one you can download it =
from www.bootdisk.com.

Select with CD-ROM support.

At the A:\ prompt type:

FORMAT C: (press enter)

When the process ends, put the WinME CD in the drive.

Now type:

E:\SETUP (press enter)

This should launch the Windows install process that will take you 40-60 =
minutes to finish.

You will end (or restart...??) with a fresh install of Windows, but no =
other software.

When you say "no other software will be installed" does
that include IE? Using Me CD-Rom I was partially
talked-thru (phone sppt) a Re-Install and had a terrible
time managing the IE portion of it that popped up; 1st,
it's confusing when it asks for a choice per "System
detects a new settings for IE. Do you want the OLD or NEW?"
This is IMPORTANT because my ME cd had IE 5 and the system
saves what I presume are the "old" IE 6 settings.. Pls
confirm that you select "New" so IE 5 is installed so that
SP1 and IE6 UPGRADES can follow from that. ALSO (BIG DEAL)
I had constant ERROR MSG's trying to completely install IE
5 and I think a phone helper told me that UNLESS YOU RENAME
(2) .dll files ( can't remember which) to ".old" it won't
re-install / I changed (2) and it THEN finsished
Installing. Does this sound familiar. Can you clarify for
readers and me in case I have to repeat sometime. Thanks!

Craig,

If you were trying to install WinME on top, I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Basically you should have uninstalled IE6.0 or downgraded to IE5.5. Also
important would be uninstalling WMP9 if you were running it.

The link provided by Noel Paton in his answer is excellent.

From your comments, it seems you have tried the reinstall.

Did it work? Any problems now?

With a format of the HDD you will install the software available in the
WinME CD and nothing else (OS, IE, OE, Windows utilities, etc.).

Thanks, Noel. URL Bookmarked for future Re-install. All the
mistakes ( ie. failiure to Uninstall things) were
compliments of Dell's Award Winning Tech Support (
Microsoft bailed me out from 8000 miles away). It is,
however, great to make international friends and learn new
languages.

Thanks, Zee, for your interest. Dell Warranty Sppt just
slipped up in having me Uninstall things, etc. but MS
bailed me out. All is well after a run of strange computer
burps that seemed to correct themselves over time (ie)
Windows Update quit working-Then started up weeks later. Go
figure.

I suspect I'm a little closer than you may think!g
Let me put it this way - I spell 'colour' - and the current time is 20:23
(your last message is timed at 16:39 for me)

You're welcome - and don't hesitate to come back if you need more.

Your comments about things not working, then working again weeks later
immediately make me think of Registry problems - are you running Norton?
