Default Win98 First Edition and wireless Internet

I have a relative with a computer running Windows 98 First Edition. It
connects to the Internet via a cable modem. She plans to get a new PC soon,
and wants both machines to have Internet access. Her ISP will provide and
install the wireless equipment. Question: will Windows 98 First Edition
work with wireless USB adapters? I seem to remember hearing Win98 Second
Edition was as far back as you could go.

You can always put in a wireless ethernet card, no USB needed.

Assuming she has USB installed and working, then you would need to ask the
ISP whether or not the equipment they are supplying is supported under
Windows 98 first edition. In any case, that's the first question to ask.
If she doesn't already have USB installed and working then you will need to
get it working, which will involve either getting drivers for Windows 98
first edition from the hardware manufacturers, or getting a plug-in USB
controller card that is supported under Windows 98 first edition, both of
which may be difficult as USB support in Windows 98 first edition was
patchy.

I would recommend checking with the ISP that Windows 98 SE is supported, and
if it is then upgrade to that version.
