Default Need PCI Ethernet Controller driver?

Hi all,
I bought a Xircom RBEM56G-100 modem/Ethernet PC card for my Thinkpad 600E on
ebay. It didn't come with any software but I did download some stuff from
Intel's site. Problem is, the directions say it should want a driver for a
PC card modem, but instead it asks for "PCI Ethernet Controller" and can't
find it. If you cancel that it says "PCI card" (can't find that either, even
after the software is installed". Then there's no tray icon, nothing to
indicate there's a PC card in there and the card won't do anything. Any
ideas where I can get this driver or what I need to do? Thanks
CT

OK, whether you downloaded the small driver package, or the large software & driver
package, I think matters not. The ReadMe files are the same. IIRC when reading it,
it indicates that the Network device is installed first, and the modem is installed
after the reboot.

The download of the small package is a self-extracting exe file that should unpack
the driver installation files into the folder you chose for the download. When
Windows asks for the PCI Ethernet controller driver, you should be pointing it to
the folder where you unpacked the downloaded file. The driver will be installed by
the netcbe.inf file that it will find there.

If you just tell it to skip it, it won't be installed. The modem installation will
come after that, pointing the installer to the same folder, where it will find the
mdmcbem.inf file to install.

I suggest you go to Device Manager and remove all items found in the "Other"
category there, then restart and follow that procedure. You *have* run the
downloaded exe file on your hard drive, in a folder of its own, to unpack the
installation files, right?

Weird. I pointed Windows to that folder, but it didn't find anything there.
If I skip the first step, NOW it decided to say "PCI Serial Controller"
instead (no luck there either). There are no files by the names you
mentioned in either the original folder or the folder it created when I ran
the setup program.

BTW I tried using a pre-installed driver for a slightly different card, but
that didn't work. Well, at least it went beep-beep when I inserted it and
actually said there was a PC card in the slot, but nothing on it would
function.

That's strange that I used the same exact page you mentioned but I don't
have the same files. I tried contacting Intel but they don't support it
anymore.

Thanks again for your help, and I hope we can get it to work!

Try using the small one....that is the one I d'loaded to check what files were
involved, and the files I named in my prior post are what is in that package.

I suggest you first remove whatever other drivers you tried using, by uninstalling
through Add\Remove programs if found there, and/or by removing all such devices in
Device Manager, preferably in Safe Mode.

OK, we're making progress! Turns out the small dl does have the right
drivers, which were installed and seem to be "working properly". The card
makes the right sound effects and the PC card tray icon menu says "Stop
Xircom etc. etc." However, when I try to get online with the modem, it says
it isn't responding and when I plug in an Ethernet cable I can't get to my
network.

Don't know if this matters, but when it was installing the Enet interface
part, it asked for files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM which I don't have,
having bought the computer used (eBay is starting not to look like such a
good place to buy computer equipment...). I was able to find them all in the
Windows folder by searching, except for twice when it came up with a dialog
that said it couldn't copy from a path, but it didn't give any filenames, so
I clicked skip. Anyway, that's just the Enet part, the modem doesn't quite
work either.

Tomorrow at 5 AM, I'm leaving the country for a month. I hope to have
e-mail access with this comp via wi-fi (as you know I don't have dial-up or
Enet ATM), but I won't be able to respond until I get off the plane, etc.
Thanks again for your continued help, and I'll check back here ASAP!

OK, we're making progress! The small dl did have the right drivers, which
are installed and "working properly" according to Device Mgr., the sound
effects work and it says the card is in the slot), but when I try to get
online with the modem, it says it isn't responding, and when I plug an Enet
cable in, I can't get to my network.

Don't know if this would matter, but when I was setting up the Enet part, I
had to skip copying one or two files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM, which I
don't have. I was able to locate the others by searching, but it didn't give
names for these ones. Anyway, that was just the Ethernet interface, so
probably not...

Early tomorrow morning I'll be leaving the country for a month. I hope to
check e-mail on this comp via wi-fi (as you know I don't have dial-up or Enet
ATM), but if it takes me a while to get back, it's because I'm having trouble
with that. Thanks again for continuing to help with this tough problem, and
I'll check here ASAP!
