Default CABLE Internet

Hi folks,

Friend has a new PC with XP Home and an older Win98 PC.

He is planning to have a cable modem hooked up to a Wireless Router with
4 ports, one port wire connected to the XP Home PC and another wire
connected to the Win98 PC - to provide internet access. He is also
planning to use a laptop via the wireless connection at a later time.

His Win98 PC is a Compaq and he doesn't see a network (RJ45) jack. Can
he just install a network card and then connect?

Does anyone see a problem with this?

Thanks, Fred

Yes, he will at least have to start with a network card. Beyond that, the setup
should be according to whatever his router instructions dictate.

Hi Gary,

Just got off the phone with my friend and he said the Comcast guy (who was next
door) told him they don't "support" Win98. Now what do you suppose that means?

I'm telling him that once he has that network card in there, it's just plug in and
surf, right?

Considering how many people I know using Win98 and Comcast, that sounds kind of
fishy to me....

They told me that about a year ago, so it's probably policy.

Point the Comcast guy to this page, and see what his reaction is.

http://www.comcast.com/Support/Corp1...tail_2205.html

If he is still "uncooperative", escalate the issue to his supervisor.

They either need to change the website or the Comcast guy's attitude.

I meant I don't know if you just plug in the cable and go or not. I'm thinking
yes, but can't say for sure. I don't know cable broadband configurations. Have a
hard enough time with DSL/Router stuff, sigh.
