Default Startup Folder Items Won't Start Up

Hi All:

I have put one item into the Startup folder, and followed
through the command line procedure to have it start when
the computer is booted. By this I mean going throught Task
Bar properties to Start Menu Programs, and following
through to create a short cut in the Startup folder.
However, this item is not loading at startup. I've tried
putting other items into the folder, and it doesn't pick
them up either. So I'm pretty sure it's the folder.

Clicking on the item in the folder does start it
successfully, so I know the short cut itself is accurate.
It just doesn't seem to respond in the folder by itself.

Any ideas?

This is my second posting for this problem. Thanks to two
people ("glee" and "Eric" who
made some comments. I tried to contact Glen directly, but
the email didn't go through.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne,

That's the Start button Programs menu I believe you are referring
to. Those programs don't start unless you click on them.
Create a shortcut to your program and put it in the
C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp folder. Those start when you
start Windows.

Hi Bill:

No, this is definitely the Startup folder, as opposed to
the Start menu. I've double checked. Any more ideas?

Its possible that the shortcut is working but its target is
failing. Double-click the shortcut in the Startup folder to check.

R-Clk the Startup folder in the left pane, & select Properties. If it is
Hidden (or Read-Only even), make it not so.

Thanks, I've checked the short cut though, and it
definitely works. For some reason Windows is failing to
read the Startup folder, and I don't know why.

The answer below turned out to be the solution. The
shortcut needed to go in the AllUsers folder. Thanks very
much for everyone's help.

Instead of adding the shortcut using the method you
describe, try directly adding a shortcut to ONE of these
locations in Windows Explorer:
-the Startup folder: C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
OR
-the AllUsers folder: C:\Windows\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup

Try Start Run and enter Msconfig. Under the General tab is "Load
Startup Group items checked" ?
You are booting into Safe mode?

I don't understand why you didn't stick with the previous thread and
reply to Glen there.

He suggested:
