Try restoring a previous registry by starting the computer in "Command
Prompt" and type "scanreg /restore". If that doesn't help, find the=20
Windows setup executables on the hard drive, rename them temporarily=20
and see what effect that has. You also might try StartupList. I =
suggest=20
you extract the executable to the c:\ drive in Safe mode and run it with =

the "/full" switch.

c:\startuplist /full

Was located in C:\...\Disabled Startup Items
c:\windows\mstask.exe

Was located in C:\windows\system\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETWORK ASSOCIATES\MCAFEE=20

Was missing entirely
C:\Program Files\Intruder Alert 99\ia99.exe

Was missing emtirely
=20
[Not that I expect it makes much difference.]
=20
I also did your suggestion to Run all the items in c:windows\tasks
Most started and then shut down immediately. Except for:
Maintenance and Cleanup which Run

Comments? Thanks for you input.

If nothing unusual happens, expand and highlight "c:\windows\tasks", =

then right-click each item in the right window and select "Run".

Process Startup comand file (autoexec.bat)
[Here it individually selects each line in the autoexec file]
Win
Load all windows drivers

javasup.vxd
C:\Windows\System\vrtwd.386

Try starting the computer using "Step by step confirmation"(tap =

the F8 key
repeatedly during bootup). This should show which part of the =

bootup
process is being executed when the setup program is started.
