USB notification missing
On one of my 98SE systems, I am not getting the notification that a USB
device is plugged in and there is no icon in the systray, therefore I do not have the ability to safely remove it. What do I need to do to get this on my system? I have that ability on all the XP systems and my 98SE laptop, but this one system has never had it. Is it a matter of adding something to the registry? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Francine |

Does the USB controller appear as a device in Device Manager, and is it
reported as operating OK? If it doesn't appear then you may need to enable it in BIOS setup - many machines of W98 vintage were delivered with USB available but not enabled. You will then need to install drivers for the USB controller - they are probably part of the motherboard driver set. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Francine" wrote in message ... The devices do appear in Device Manager and they all work properly. I just
don't get the icon in the systray and the ability to click on it to safely remove the device. USB is enables in the BIOS. -- Francine "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ... What devices are you having the problem with? Many devices do not need to
be removed safely - they can be unplugged without warning. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Francine" wrote in message ... I'm referring to my flash drives and my external hard drive. I never
thought about it before on this computer, however I did get a corrupted flash drive and I believe it must be because it was not "safely" disconnected from the computer. -- Francine "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ... Flash drives and an external HD should appear in the tray, as the system
needs to ensure that the device is not in use before it is disconnected. Are you sure that the devices you are using are designed for Windows 98? It is the responsibility of the device driver to tell Windows that it is the type of device that needs a systray notification. When the device is connected, check its properties in device manager. It should be identified as a mass storage device. The only reference I can find to a similar problem suggests using different drivers, so you could check with the manufacturer to see if a driver upgrade is available. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Francine" wrote in message ...
