Default HPdeskJet 895SE - "Print to File"

One of the selections when printing is "Print to File". If I elect to
print to file, exactly what is produced? Is a file created on disk with
a selected name and in what format? Is it a Dos file? Found no answer
to this at the HP website. Somewhere I did see a communication
suggesting that a PDF file could somehow be converted to a Word or
WordPerfect file by using the "print to file" command from the printer.

Does anyone have an answer or a reference as to where I could go for an
answer to this question?

When you select the print to file option then the system will prompt you for
a file name. You select the name and location for the print file. The file
that is created will contain the print commands that would have been sent to
the printer. You could use the file to print the document to the same type
printer either on this machine or another machine - it's not useful for any
other purpose.

Some file writing utilities, like a PDF file creator, install themselves as
a 'printer' configured to print to a file. This allows an application (such
as a word processor) to send its output to the 'printer' so that a file of
the correct format (PDF in this example) is created. The word processor
thinks it is printing to a printer and isn't aware that it is actually
creating a PDF file.
