Slave HD.
I am running Win98SE on a 40gig HD. No problems there at
all. I have this small 6gig,formatted/fat32 blank HD I want to connect as slave. The plan is to download all extra utility programs to it so I can reinstall them from there if need be. Plus,it can be removed ,if ever needed, to install the software on to other machines. These stored .exe programs would be like Spybot S&D,Adaware,AV updates etc. The problem is. I set the master HD jumper to Master w/slave. And the slave HD to slave as per diagrams on the cases. Install and connect wireing. Turn the PC on and all works. Windows boots to desktop the slave is shown in My Computer and in Device Manager with no problems. But, when I shutdown and reboot or restart the system freezes after bios screens and before desktop. It will not boot pass this no matter how many times I try. Until I unplug the slave. Then the machine boots normal. I can then shut PC down and reconnect the slave and it will boot OK. But again at restart or shutdown/boot it freezes. Have tried the layout in all ways. Changing the jumpers changing the position on the ribbon connector. Even booted with only the blank drive connected and did a full scan disk via the 98 boot disk. Which showed the HD in perfect condition. The bottom line is the system will only boot once with a slave but not twice. Also have checked bios for anything that may be causing this. I have the MB owners manual. And I went through each window and read the manual very carefully on each line to see if there was anything that might be the cause. Nothing. Any ideas would be appreciated. |

Slave HD.
Well, you have a 40GB WD for starters, the other 6GB is of unknown mfr to
date. Try keeping the master at the end of the cable, always. Get a 80 wire ide cable, 18 inches in length. After the bios finds and maps each HD in auto, switch to user. Settings should show for each. Save, and reboot. If that don't work, change the bios setting back to auto. Then move whatever is on the secondary to the primary, slave position. And, place the 6GB in the location vacated. "98 Slave" wrote in message ... I am running Win98SE on a 40gig HD. No problems there at all.
