2nd HD not accessible
I have installed a second hard drive into the computer.
The BIOS recognizes the hard drive as the Primary Slave. In the BIOS everything looks fine. It lists the Primary Master HD and the Primary Slave HD. However, when Windows loads the slave drive is not listed in My Computer. Of course, the master drive is in My Computer. What is wrong with the hard drive? |

Okay, the 2nd HD did not come out of a box. It is not a
brand new, unformatted HD. It came from another computer. The HD has already been formatted and even has data on the drive. Do I still need to format the drive? -----Original Message----- after installing the actual drive, the drive must be partitioned and formatted before Windows will see it, until then it will not appear Boot to DOS, run Fdisk select the new drive (option 5 to set drive) and create partition(s) then format the new partitions and windows should see the new drives -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters "seth" wrote in message ... | I have installed a second hard drive into the computer. | The BIOS recognizes the hard drive as the Primary Slave. | | In the BIOS everything looks fine. 2nd HD not accessible
Okay guys, lets see if i can make this easy to understand.
I took a HD out of Computer A. I disconnected power and cable. I place HD in Computer B making sure to pay attention to the jumper settings. I have correctly set the jumpers so the HD is a slave drive. The BIOS picks up on this correctly and lists the master and slave drives correctly. After Windows loads, I have gone into Device Manager like Brian suggested to check out what it had to say. Device Manager lists the HD as GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE02. So Device Manager lists the HD but does not list it as Maxtor, which is the manufacturer. However, My Computer does not list the HD, so I cannot access the drive through Windows. I don't know if this matters, but in Device Manager the primary drive is listed as GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE01. For AlmostBob, what is overlay software? I hope this helps. -----Original Message----- Did you connect it correctly on the ribbon cable? Are you using a 80 wire-40 pin connector if required? Old motherboards, old BIOSs (old in computer years like dogyears *10) have/had
a limit on the size and specification(tracks sectors platters) of the drive that they could see, drive manufacturers produce software to overlay the BIOS to enable the pc to see really large drives, hence 'drive overlay' software, many large drives come with a software disk that installs the overlays automatically, if the drive is in the PC when purchased the overlay is installed in the shop, either way the user may not know it is there till something like this happens and the drive isnt working. and its easy to check for. -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters "seth" wrote in message ... | Okay guys, lets see if i can make this easy to understand. | | I took a HD out of Computer A. Okay, problem solved. Apparently, under Win98, you can't
view drives that use NTFS. Does that seem about right? thats right, the ntfs doesnt run under win 98, except with a different kind of
overlay software, like paragon http://www.xkee.com/utility/paragon-ntfs-for-win98/ never used any ntfs overlays, but the utility above will let you read it if you need to save the data, if the drive is going to be permanently fitted to the win98 machine save the data, the reformat to fat32 -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters "seth" wrote in message ... | Okay, problem solved.
