We need the complete exact error message, not "somesort of page fault". :-)

When you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and
post back with the exact details word for word, up to but not including the memory
registers.

Does the error also occur in Safe Mode?
To boot to Safe Mode:
-Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
-Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

To leave Safe Mode, click Start Shutdown Restart.
