I was given a computer by a 'soon to be deceased'
friend, which they bought 2nd hand through a small local clearing house. It came with no CD, no hard copy instructions and missing the interactive tutorial part of "Welcome to Windows". I received the gift with the rapt enthusiasm that one would expect from a flounder upon receiving a copy of "The Calculus". But I wriggled out of the sand, got connected to the net and did my best to escape from Flatland into the ethernet. After about 3 months using the "Peeling Onions" approach to problem solving, I thought I was about to make a real breakthrough, (thanks largely to having discovered this NG) only to find myself facing what might be a classic, "You can't get there from here" paradox, or not; I dunno. The creator of my unit, model #En6550, Touchfax(913- 599-669) doesn't "think" they support W98 anymore, but will check & get back to me sometime. That my unit was made and sold in Canada did not seem impress him as much as I'd hoped, either; eh? There are many maintenance & problem solving issues requiring stuff I don't have ,eg., how to fix my corrupt cache(diagnosed by MVP Sandy) or do system backups(program missing, apparently) without a 'reboot disc' and the W98 CD? And I am still very confused about organizing files and and just knowing what different things do since "Welcome to Windows" mat was missing from the front door. So, question is; assuming my situation is not unique, where do I go to find sol'ns so I don't waste so much time going up blind alleys and down rabbit holes; not to mention embarassing myself by writing epistles to this esteemed body of worthies when a couple of lines should do. rooster boundary bay bc |

Its not so bad as you might feel, Sandi's diagnosis usually gives the answer
to the problem as well, IIRC the cache can be deleted after boot up, but reread her answer to you for the skinny, Missing backup programs, not as bad as you might think as msbackup is a disgusting POS that wont really work well for large backups, wont support cdr/cdrw, better is to install one that works, in this search google is your friend boot disk can be made from windows start settings control panel add remove programs startup disk and for the missing windows cd, many are installed on the hard drive,, start find files or folders named "*.cab" If you get a set of .cab files with almost consecutive names, driver1 drver2 etc then that folder contains your windows setup files and you can point installerzs to that folder during hardware/software installations. There are times when you will want to save a complete web page out of
IE, and there are techniques to make it smoother, if not simpler, but for NG posts, you're much better off using Outlook Express, which is better set up for handling newsgroups--the only difficulty is that you need to go through some preliminaries: (1) in IE, go to www.support.microsoft.com/ (2) click 'Microsoft Public Newsgroups' (3) on the page that comes up, in the sidebar at the right, click 'Using Newsgroups' (4) scroll to 'Using an NNTP Newsreader' (towards bottom of page) If you go to the links provided: 'How to configure Outlook Express for Internet Newsgroups' and How to subscribe to Newsgroups in Outlook Express', you'll find all the skinny you need to get going. When you 'save as' from OE, you have a number of choices, but you can always edit the results if you want, using an external editor, inserting notes, doing copying, pasting, and generally cleaning up and simplifying what can be a mess. WRT the saving of web pagesin IE, there are several ways to do this. Note that if the page you are trying to save references a '3rd party server', i.e., if some part of the page is on another machine, I.E. will not save it in this simple fashion, and you may have to do it sequetially. If you simply choose one of the choices given you in the 'Save As' dialog box, the first one saves it as a complete set of referenced files in the selected folder as well as new subfolders which it creates. See below for the second selection which is 'Web Archive'. The third selection will just save the initially called .htm page. If all you want is the HTML part, not the directory trees, the sidebars, and nice graphics, this may work for you just fine, depending upon the habits of the author. Just try it, and if you get an .htm file of only about 2kB, you'll probably find that an attempt to open the file later with IE will get you 'Page not available', meaning you have to dig a little farther, but if it's larger than 2-3 kB, chances are you have what you want. If you didn't get the text, you can save the whole page complete (first choice in the 'Save as' dialog box) which will give you the page as a 'calling' HTML page, with subfolder(s), the first of which is named similarly to the calling .HTM file. You already know that the top level ..htm is only a couple of kB, in which case it has nothing you want. The real text is found in one of the subfolders created by the 'Save as' and you can usually identify it by its size--it's usually the largest of any .htm file there, and often the only one. In either case, you can copy the .htm you think is the file you want to another directory (folder), then double-click on it to have IE display it as an .htm file. If IE wants to dial-up your ISP, you can just tell it cancel, and IE will show the page 'with errors' which means nothing for your text. If you get a 'page unavailable', you chose the wrong .htm. The point of all this is you only need to store one file of, say, 50 kB where the complete save amounts to as much as a Meg, perhaps, with all the ..gifs, etc., you don't want, to say nothing of the clutter of extra subfolders. Once you have the .htm that is the text you want, save it with an appropriate title, in some higher folder, as an .htm file. You may then delete all the stuff you saved before(subfolders and all). In case you *want* all the graphics, you can also choose the "save as" option that saves the page as a 'web page archive, complete' or .mht file. The drawback is that it is a large file, generally as large as the complete save with subfolders, all told, but it *is* just *one* file, and is easier to move and copy, etc. Sorry, hard to say in a few words, Good Luck, Joe "rooster" wrote in message ... -----Original Message----- -----Original Message----- Its not so bad as you might feel, Sandi's diagnosis usually gives the answer to the problem as well, IIRC the cache can be deleted after boot up, but reread her answer to you for the skinny, Missing backup programs, not as bad as you might think as msbackup is a disgusting POS that wont really work well for large backups, wont support cdr/cdrw, better is to install one that works, in this search google is your friend boot disk can be made from windows start settings control panel add remove programs startup disk and for the missing windows cd, many are installed on the hard drive,, start find files or folders named "*.cab" If you get a set of .cab files with almost consecutive names, driver1 drver2 etc then that folder contains your windows setup files and you can point installerzs to that folder during hardware/software installations. It came with no CD, no hard copy | instructions and missing the interactive tutorial part | of "Welcome to Windows". I received the gift with the rapt | enthusiasm that one would expect from a flounder upon | receiving a copy of "The Calculus". But I wriggled out of | the sand, got connected to the net and did my best to | escape from Flatland into the ethernet. | After about 3 months using the "Peeling Onions" | approach to problem solving, I thought I was about to make | a real breakthrough, (thanks largely to having discovered | this NG) only to find myself facing what might be a | classic, "You can't get there from here" paradox, or not; | I dunno. | The creator of my unit, model #En6550, Touchfax (913- | 599-669) doesn't "think" they support W98 anymore, but | will check & get back to me sometime. That my unit was | made and sold in Canada did not seem impress him as much | as I'd hoped, either; eh? | There are many maintenance & problem solving issues | requiring stuff I don't have ,eg., how to fix my corrupt | cache(diagnosed by MVP Sandy) or do system backups (program | missing, apparently) without a 'reboot disc' and the W98 | CD? And I am still very confused about organizing files | and and just knowing what different things do | since "Welcome to Windows" mat was missing from the front | door. | So, question is; assuming my situation is not unique, | where do I go to find sol'ns so I don't waste so much time | going up blind alleys and down rabbit holes; not to | mention embarassing myself by writing epistles to this | esteemed body of worthies when a couple of lines should do. | rooster | boundary bay bc | . |
