Default From XP to Win98 SE?

Yes that's right I want to go from Win XP to Win 98 SE.
My employer has some old machines and is getting rid of them.
They have XP Professional on them. I have a crashed machine at home
with Win 98 SE and the original install disk.( I am assuming I have
the right to install 98SE on another working machine?)
Is it possible to "f-disk" the XP and all files off the machine and install
Win98 SE?
The Hard drive is FAT32 file system.
Thanks
McM

Yes, you can FDisk and reformat. Boot with a Win98 boot floppy that has
FDisk on it and delete all partiitions.

That depends on what version of Win98 you have. If it is an OEM version,
such as one that came pre-installed on a Dell, Gateway, etc., no. You'll
have to read the EULA to be sure of what you can do with it.

Is it possible to "f-disk" the XP and all files off the machine and install
Win98 SE?

Any hard drive can be re-formatted as you see fit. Install any OS that
you want to and have a license for.

If the drives have been set up as NTFS then the W98 FDISK program might not
be able to see the partitions, and in that case it may refuse to delete
them. See here for ZAP or WIPE utilities which will clear the drive and
allow FDISK to create new partitions.

Bravo Xeno!
I have done exactly the same thing recently to an XP box.
I reformatted the HDD to Fat 32
then called in a IT tech who, ghosted my
current W98se HDD onto the new computer.

I now have a reasonably identical computer as a backup.

Why did you dump XP? Just to make it identical to the other one?

Are both machines identical? Ghost gets an entire image, hardware and =
all and cloning a machine that is not exact in hardware can/may cause =
problems.
From Ghost help:
quote
Hardware restrictions

Norton Ghost is designed to restore to and clone identical hardware. =
When Microsoft Windows is installed, drivers necessary to support your =
hardware are installed to the hard disk and recorded in the Windows =
Registry. If you move an installation of Windows to another computer, =
either by directly moving the hard disk or copying it using a Ghost =
operation, there is no guarantee that it will boot or function =
correctly. Although Microsoft provides tools, such as Sysprep, that may =
alleviate these problems to volume license holders, these tools are =
usually unavailable to consumer or small business users.

A computer with Windows installed should be copied to a computer with =
identical hardware. Moving or cloning file systems that do not contain =
an operating system does not usually present a problem.

And I do suppose that you know installing Windows on two machines is =
illegal if you only have one license.=20

If you have a retail installation disc, you can install the operating system
on another PC. You can only use it for that particular PC, and no others.
If previously installed on another PC, you must remove it. Read
"license.txt" in the windows directory from dos using edit command, or in
safe mode using notepad on your current "crashed" 98 PC.

There is no assurance that Win98SE will support the hardware on these PCs,
and if not, do you have the hardware drivers for the 98SE OS readily
available and in a media your PC can read?

Fdisk will remove all partitions except one type that XP can make. This is
called a dos logical drive in an extended partition in NTFS format. Fdisk
can remove an NTFS formatted primary partition.

You have an alternative option of still using XP PRO. like I do in a
dual-boot configuration of 98SE and XP PRO. I love my computer now and
really have come to respect it like a very delicate and fragile piece of
machinary. My computer treats me well and I take care of it with updating,
making sure everything is going well -- aka no error messages/device errors,
etc. Anyway, I hope your transition to 98SE is smooth and please consider a
dual-boot of 98SE and XP PRO. so you can have the best of both worlds. My
System in brief is as follows:

Customized Falcon-Northwest machine -- updated by them once and now updated
by me --
(bought in 1999 with original 98 First Edition)
ASUS MB
P4 2.4 Ghz.
512 DDR Ram (sorry Gary I had forgetten that I had updated to DDR when I
upgraded my machine)
Dual-hard drive Both Western Digital 40-gig 98SE Fat32 and 80-gig XP PRO.
NTFS
ATI 9200 -- 128 mb AGP Video card with 8x AGP Support
Sound Blaster Audigy
HPdeskjet 3820 (only issue is I use current 7 drivers in 98SE but must use
old version 5 drivers in XP PRO. I have been unable to get around this issue
and it is not that big a deal but I still find it intriguing)
Optiquest CRT monitor (not into LCD monitors yet -- I like the big fat
Cathode Ray Tubes -- smile
Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 audio system
Two Mice (Microsoft Mouse Wheel with old trackball technology) in standard
PS2 port for older game support
(Microsoft Mouse Explorer 3.0 USB and PS2 Compatible using
in USB port
Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick (I really liked using this joystick
in Wing Commander Prophecy)
Palm PDA M130
DVD burner
CD burner
Good old 1.44 Teac Floppy drive
Etc.

Though I might have misunderstood, my (guess? ASSumption?) was that he was
buying the computer but not necessarily the license for XP.

If the XP came installed on the computer, or the XP license is fully
transferred with the computer, then I'd suggest you just stay with Windows
XP - you'll be WAY ahead of anything 9x can do for you.

But if you're only buying the hardware, then of course it is necessary to
wipe the operating system and put on a copy of Windows that you own.
