When I press ctl+alt+del, the task manager shows TWO copies of

'explorer'
in
the list.

Many times when I (finally) succeed in closing the extra copy, it

comes
right back (list shows two copies 'running'/)

What causes this and how do I permanently cure this?

go to Start - Run
type msinfo32.exe - OK
select Software Environment - Running Tasks

What do you see?

***

There is no 'running tasks' choice shown.

Did you expand the Software Environment branch?

My Running Tasks include the following:

Explorer.exe 4.72.3110.1 Microsoft Corporation
Windows Explorer C:\WIN98SE\Explorer.exe 4.0
Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Operating System

Msinfo32.exe 4.10.2222 Microsoft Corporation
MSInfo32 C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT
SHARED\MSINFO\Msinfo32.exe 4.0
Microsoft System Information

***
FOUND IT I did not see that in the list before.

I found those and 32 others - I will have to look more closely at that list
when the two explorers show up - will report when I check.

Default TWO copies of explorer

Might as well post your Startup Group... "START button, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup Programs". Use the EDIT menu to do so. Do you see Explorer mentioned in the Command column? Normally, you won't! But, really...

(1) Update defs & run a virus scan, or...

http://www.mcafee.com/us/
I think it will not effect a cure, but only report.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Will effect a cure for certain viruses only.

(2) Take the names in the Startup Group to the site Brian A. posted or to another of these...

Default TWO copies of explorer

I thought you earlier looked in "Running Tasks". I direct you to "Startup Programs", which are the items more easily controllable. All else of the former hopefully are essential system background tasks.

Better go take that McAfee test!

Here they are, using your sukggested method. BTW the two lines were next to
each other almost at the bottom of the list. (they were followed by the
msinfo32.exe which was last.)
