Default Drivers present but "not found" ????

After a reinstall of ME system files, windows will no
longer see my zip drive.
It says :
USBNTMAP.SYS not found and
USBSTOR.SYS not found
When I search for the drivers I get the message:
The best driver windows found is already instaloled on
this device
AND it gives the locations:
C:\WINDOWS\INF\USBNTMAP.INF
C:\WINDOWS\INF\USBSTOR.INF
So, can anyone tell me if there are there or not?

usbntmap.sys and usbstor.sys are with most other usb related files in the
"cab" files in the Win9x folder on the Win Me CD and/or in a sub-folder of
Windows\Options and not directly visible in Explorer. Look for the folder
containing the file BASE2.CAB. When the installer asks for files point it
towards the folder containing the file BASE2.CAB.

See MS KB 265371 - "How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows
Me" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=265371) for details of how to manually
extract files from the cab set. Alternatively use MSConfig |
General | Extract File... and follow the prompts to extract a new copy of the
required files to your windows\system32\drivers folder . Most USB related
files can be found in BASE2.CAB although some are located in other cabs.

Alternatively you could visit http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/63/63237.htm
and download usb-WinMe.exe which contains WinMe's usb related files. Extract
the files you want and put them in windows\system32\drivers.

Notice the difference in the filenames??
one set are .INF files (giving instructions on how to load the files
required) and one are the missing files - with .SYS extensions.
the SYS files are the actual driverfiles. - which are probably present on
your HD - but your system Manufacturer decided in their infinite wisdom not
to include them in your install - repeat the install, and when it asks for
the files, point it at C:\Windows\Options\CABS, and see what happens

Yes, I did fix that and the zip drive is operating
Next problem....
Since the reinstall of ME system files. I cannot open some
of the programs (eg Microsoft Office) although they are
obviously present on the c:\ drive
What's up with that?

What do you mean by a reinstall of "Win Me system files"? I assume you mean
you reinstalled Win Me. How did you do this? If a clean install or a
reinstall using a manufacturer's Recovery CD you will have to reinstall your
applications. You say you cannot open some programs although "they are
obviously on the C:\ drive". Why are they "obviously on your C:\ drive"?
Have you checked that the programs are still there in your C:\Program Files
folder? Take Word for example, how are you trying to launch Word. What
exactly happens including all error messages you see?

I FOLLLOWED A PROCEDURE I FOUND AT:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1066382239
I assume you mean
you reinstalled Win Me.

MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THIS REINSTALLS ONLY THE WINME
SYSTEM FILES

I SEE THEM LISTED UNDER C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE
AND C:\MICROSOFT OFFICE

Have you checked that the programs are still there in

your C:\Program Files

launch Word. What
exactly happens including all error messages you see?

THE MESSAGE SAYS:
"This application must be installed to run. Please run
Setup from the location where you originally installed the
application."

You have just destroyed your system. The procedure outlined in that article
was written by someone who clearly gets pleasure by displaying their
ignorance. By installing into C:\WindowsC and then deleting C:\Windows you
have destroyed your system and few if any of your installed programs will run.
You might as well now wipe your hard disk clean and start all over.

What should have done is reinstall Win Me over itself rather than using the
convoluted procedure you chose to do.
