Default Defrag and scandisk problems

Not sure if my issue is really specific to ME, as it's occurred only in
past few months and not before, though my O/S hasn't changed from ME.

If Scandisk runs from startup (after an abnormal shutdown), there's no
problem, but when I run it from the ME desktop and it keeps restarting until
I finally get the 'should I go on with this?' window. Same thing when I try
to run defrag.

I have tools to look at running modules but not the knowledge to spot any
stuff not really needed for ME to run properly. I don't try to run either
Scandisk or defrag with any applications open or while connected, have no
alarms scheduled in any calendar application, am not using any screen saver
(I turn the monitor off instead), and always run them immediately after a
reboot to ensure that no fragments are in memory from closed apps or
internet connections.

Thanks for any advice.

Restarting at these times has always been a Win ME issue. One can give you a
lot of advice about what else to shut - and particularly to physically
disconnect for the duration, if you're on cable, and it may or may not work.
And this is why, several years ago now, some of the regulars here developed
a program called ScanDefrag, which runs them before the desktop has loaded.
I think you should go straight to that.

Not sure if this will help. I run 98 SE and in lieu of turning off
programs, I reboot into safe mode. Scandisk,Defrag etc will then run.

If a TSR is running and writing to disk no program like defrag will
run. It will keep starting over.

Running Scandisk and Defrag in the Safe Mode was my easiest solution.
However, doing so would 'scramble' all my desktop icons after going back
into Windows mode. There are a lot of free desktop saver apps out there, I
like "Save My Desktop!), a very small, one trick pony....all it does is
restore your original icon positions.
You may want to check with some others in the NG for this apps use with Me,
but, I believe it to be compatible.
Available he http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=1626
......a 260Kb file.
Iconoid works on Me, however, it is a much larger file and does a lot more,

Heirloom, old and I know it works on XP

I remember some firewalls makes Scandisk grouchy and keep restarting.

Dear Joyce,
If scan disk won't run in safe mode on it's own you can always get it
to work in safe mode by running the "Maintenance Wizard".
Suggest you consider a good registry cleaner as well.
