true color & 800x600
I have a PC that is mostly used to play games and not hooked to the
internet. It is stuck in 16 colors and 640x480. When I go to Display and try to change to true colors (24 bit) nothing shows but 16 colors and the resolution is stuck at 640x480. I get the message that system restore has been turned off and to uncheck the "clear disable system restore" in the troubleshooting tab. I did this and then it says I have to restart the PC and I said OK. When the PC restarts, windows ME doesn't come up. Amongst the text there is "Incorrect Drive A type -- run setup F1. F1 will not work and the PC hangs up so I turn it off by the power button... turn it back on and Windows Me comes on. I go to Display and the old settings are still there and stuck... and it tells me to uncheck the "clear Disable System Restore." What can I do. Thanks, Eileen |

Noel,
I tried to start in safe mode and couldn't.. Windows ME opened. Is there a way to get to safe mode besides either holding down Control Key or taping F8 while rebooting? That error message appears to be related to attempting to run AVG version 6
while in Safe Mode. (if that's the case, then you need to update it now to v7, as support for v6 finishes at year-end!!) This is beginning to look like either a hardware problem, or a virus! Time for the big guns, I think! If you don't already have a boot floppy for the PC, go to www.bootdisk.com and download a bootdisk maker for Win ME (the OEM one) run it to create the boot disk, then use that to boot the machine - does that work OK?? On a known-clean machine, go to www.f-prot.com and download F-Prot for DOS - read the instructions, and create the boot disks from that, then use them to boot the PC, and run the virus checker over the system. see what it finds. Such errors can be caused by problems with the RAM - download DocMemory from www.simmtester.com and create the boot disk. Use this to boot the PC, and run the test overnight to check the RAM thoroughly. Noel,
This PC is not hooked up to the internet and I haven't installed any new games for a long time, so I don't think it is a virus. I'm a novice when it comes to fixing the PC. Do you think it would fix the problem if I re-installed Win ME? Is it hard to do that? Regards, Eileen "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Reinstalling Win ME is a last resort - not a first port-of-call!
There are a lot of very good reasons not to reinstall - and very few good reasons for doing so. Just because a PC isn't hooked to the Internet doesn't mean that it can't get infected - any floppy disk or CD could be an infection-carrier. do the scans I indicated below and see what they return. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj A Happy Xmas, and a Merry New Year to everyone! Noel,
Okay... I'm having a big party tonight so have a lot to do... then there are the New Year parties. When that is over, I will download Doc Memory Ram. But first... on the site there are two picks: win 95/98 and win 2K/98 & XP. I have win ME. The only one for ME is a Beta... which one should I download? I'm sorry that I am so much trouble but I'm not too smart when it comes to fixing PC only operating them and I am 71 years old.... but still learning. Eileen "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Such errors can be caused by problems with the RAM - download DocMemory from www.simmtester.com and create the boot disk. Use this to boot the PC, and run the test overnight to check the RAM thoroughly. Noel, When I turned on the PC this morning, I got the message "Driver [CORE] not found winerr=2. I finally got up the Start up menu and typed in 3 for safe mode and hit enter. It hung up, so I still can't get to safe mode. Another thing... my "m" key must be stuck for it won't work. Eileen "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Eileen" wrote in message ... I have a PC that is mostly used to play games and not hooked to the internet.
