IE 6 fails to start (wants to send error report)

On the system in question (win-98se, fully patched/updated - to the
extent that it can be) IE was well behaved. I was away for a few days
and a relative stayed at my house and was using the computer. At some
point IE got screwed up.

So right now when IE is launched, no IE window is created or started.
Instead, some sort of error window comes up that says "Microsoft
Internet Explorer has encounterd a problem and needs to close". There
is a checkbox to restart IE, along with a couple of buttons (send error
report, don't send report).

The details of the report contains the following selected info:

Is it correct that the problem here is the interaction between ie and
shell32?

Shell32.dll is version 4.72.3812.600, user32.dll and user.exe is version
4.10.2231.

Would a remedy be to install IE? Is that even possible?

PS: Firefox continues to function correctly, although I believe that
I'm seeing some strange behavior (such as the home, end, and arrow keys
don't always function in the URL entry box).

This was answered in another newsgroup.

If you must post identical messages in more than one newsgroup please
crosspost, i.e. please place all of the newsgroups in the Newsgroup field of
one message, separated by commas. That way when someone reads the message
in one newsgroup it will be marked as read in all of them. In addition, an
answer posted in one newsgroup will generally show up in all of them.

This is usually not necessary since most of those who answer posts read
more than one newsgroup.

Something not mentioned in that error report likely is causing the
problem, maybe by causing the two files mentioned no longer to work well
together.

Those are the right files-- I have the same ones! I've also crashed to
the MS Error Report Tool-- but it hasn't happened in quite a while!

It may or may not be a remedy. It is possible. Maybe look through the
following article first. The suggested cure was not what worked for me,
though. Mine just eventually went away on its own.

My friend had this problem. I spent a few hours over the last two days
but I finally found a fix.
What helped was the following from Microsoft:

The article had several suggestions but what worked was to disable third
party extensions for IE.

Basically my friend had installed some third party program which had a
bug in it. That is, trying to access some area in memory it shouldn't be
(memory page fault).

So the short term fix is to do what the article says which is the
following:
1) Close all instances of Internet Explorer, click Start, point to
Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
2) Double-click Internet Options.
3) Click the Advanced tab.
4) Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser
extensions (requires restart) check box.
5) Restart Internet Explorer.

Poof! No more page faults.

The permanent fix is to uninstall the "guilty" third party program.

If that article is no cure, here is how to try the over-install of IE...

(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"

It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows.
IE & E are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an
over-install of IE is indicated.

(2) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there
aremore than one (I have two each), click the one in
"C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files" or
"C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.
