Default Freezing up when starting and scan disk

Last night when I started my computer it froze up when it got to my screen
saver, when I tried to reboot it would freeze up when the scan disk got to
19%. If I try to "X" out of the scan disk it freezed up when it gets to my
screen saver. How can I get it to scan and start-up?

The first thing you need to do is disable the screensaver.

Right-click the Desktop, click Properties, then ScreenSaver tab.
Set the Screensaver dropdown box to "None" and click OK.

Does that stop the freezing?

It may be necessary for him to boot to Safe Mode to try what you say...

Hold F5 during boot, to get to Safe Mode. Or, hold CTRL during boot, & select Safe Mode from the Startup Menu.

Default Freezing up when starting and scan disk

I screwed up I meant my wallpaper. Unfortunately things see to have gotten
worse. When I turn my computer on and hold down the CTRL key or the F5 key,
it allows me to select the Safe Mode and then goes directly to Scan Disk,
this morning it was getting to about 93% complete and then it would give me
an error, Out of Memory. When I try to "X" out of Scan Disk I'm getting and
error, While initializing device IOS Windows protection error. You need to
restart your computer. I'd like to be able to save the info on my hard drive
but it I can't I'd like to know how to reformat it because I'd still like to
use the computer and Windows 98 for something even tho I'm going to be
getting a new Dell anyway.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Test the drive by running the diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturer's
web site.

If you don't know what brand the drive is, you can download the limited-use
free edition of OnTrack Data Advisor from this location:
http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/#dataadvisor

When you click the download link on that page for Data Advisor 5.0 Free
edition, you will be taken to a page to register with the OnTrack site, then
you will be able to download the diskette creator file.

The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a working
Windows system and will guide you through the process of extracting the Data
Advisor onto a 3.5" floppy disk.

Download and Use Instructions:
http://www.ontrack.com/dataadvisor/downloadinfo.asp

As far as I know, Maxtor's diagnostics will also work with any brand of
drive, and the older versions of Seagate Seatools also, but I am not sure
about the new version.

I'm sorry to be such a pest but I tried to download it at work and the file
size is 1.91MB and the floppy is only 1.44MB so it won't let me copy it onto
a floppy. Am I showing my ignorance or what can I do?

Yes, test the drive, as Glee suggested. May as well also test the RAM...
http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp RAM tester
http://www.memtest86.com/ RAM tester

Can it be Scandisk is getting hung up on an expendable file? Here are some you may delete in DOS (Command Prompt Only). Then, do the Scandisk, & try to boot to Safe Mode again.

(1) SMARTDRV
This speeds up hard drive processing considerably in DOS--
considerably, & yet it may still seem slow if TIFs are incredibly huge!

(3) DELTREE C:\Windows\Cookies\ /y
These are your Cookies. They may hold settings & passwords, site
specific, but generally are fine to delete.

(4) DELTREE C:\Windows\Tempor~1\ /y
These are your Temporary Internet Files. A DOS delete does reset
the Index.dat in Content.IE5 to 32 KB. It won't stay that small for
long. However, Cookies in the top TIF folder would survive this Deltree.

(5) DELTREE C:\Windows\History\ /y
This is a collection of the sites you have visited. It will begin
to grow again, depending upon "Days to keep..." at "Internet Options,
General tab".

(6) DELTREE C:\Windows\Temp\ /y
Unless you were in the middle of an install, these are safe to delete, as they are all there for temporary use. Some installs will have a file waiting in there to execute at boot to "complete" the install.

(7) DELTREE C:\Windows\Applog\ /y
This folder contains a collection of sometimes huge files used by Defrag when the option to optimize is chosen. They are expendable & will begin to accumulate again at your next successful boot.

(8) DEL C:\Windows\Win386.swp
This is a file, not a folder. But it can be huge. It is the Swap File & will be created anew at boot, perhaps much smaller to start.

WARNING: DELTREE is a powerful command. It will wipe out the folder you
specify. DO NOT HIT ENTER too soon, or you will wipe out your system.
Get all the way to the end of those DELTREE lines.

Download it to a folder on the work hard drive, maybe... C:\Windows\Temp. Follow the instructions at the site...

You are welcome. Keep us informed. There are MS articles that mention your condition, but try these preliminary measures first. Good luck.

| But, if you know the make of the hard drive, go straight for one of the manufacturer's utilities, & do same.

| | I'm sorry to be such a pest but I tried to download it at work and the file
| | size is 1.91MB and the floppy is only 1.44MB so it won't let me copy it onto
| | a floppy. Am I showing my ignorance or what can I do?

| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |

| | I screwed up I meant my wallpaper. Unfortunately things see to have gotten
| | worse. When I turn my computer on and hold down the CTRL key or the F5
| | key,
| | it allows me to select the Safe Mode and then goes directly to Scan Disk,
| | this morning it was getting to about 93% complete and then it would give
| | me
| | an error, Out of Memory. When I try to "X" out of Scan Disk I'm getting
| | and
| | error, While initializing device IOS Windows protection error. You need to
| | restart your computer. I'd like to be able to save the info on my hard
| | drive
| | but it I can't I'd like to know how to reformat it because I'd still like
| | to
| | use the computer and Windows 98 for something even tho I'm going to be
| | getting a new Dell anyway.
| |
| | Thanks for your help in advance.

| | It may be necessary for him to boot to Safe Mode to try what you say...
| |
| | Hold F5 during boot, to get to Safe Mode. Or, hold CTRL during boot, &
| | select Safe Mode from the Startup Menu.

| | | The first thing you need to do is disable the screensaver.
| | |
| | | Right-click the Desktop, click Properties, then ScreenSaver tab.
| | | Set the Screensaver dropdown box to "None" and click OK.
| | |
| | | Does that stop the freezing?
