Ghost Restore Sets REadOnly Bit
Only close to the correct NG for this but......
I did a format and reinstall using Ghost2003. W98se runs OK and some apps run fine, others won't run. Most of the files were restored with the R (REadOnly) bit set. Now it's a windows or DOS maneuver to restore the archive bit to essentially a whole drive worth of files. The Ghost Help file doesn't address the problem that I have found. The backup CDR is error free. Suggestions welcomed. |

Best to do this from a Command Prompt Only, since I *think* files that are
"in use" won't be able to have the attribute changed, and will likely produce an error, stopping the procedure in its tracks. Not sure, and I can't test at this moment, but it's what I would do. -- Gary S. From DOS enter: attrib -r C:\*.* /s Or for a folder and its sub folders: attrib -r C:\Myfolder\*.* /s /S Processes files in all directories in the specified path. From DOS enter Attrib /? for info. Yes, that's what I meant by "from DOS". Better to make it clear though. I believe Windows may reset some of it's system files back to Read Only which should not be a problem. Any OT thoughts on how to prevent another occurance? Best, Dick I haven't used the Ghost (pre-Semantec) I have for some time but I seem to remember a setting to maintain attributes. Restoring copied files from a CD gives the files the Read Only attribute. However if they are zipped then copied to a CD they maintain the attributes. I use a disk copy utility that came with my Maxtor Drive. This copies partitions, maintains the attributes, optionally makes the backup drive bootable and is easy to restore. It does not create a file but clones the source partition so the files are always available. Can be used from Windows or DOS. Some HDD drive manufacturers have a drive copy utility on their site for download. Glad you got rid of the r's. :-) Regards, Bill Watt Win98 Computer Help & Other Information http://home.ptd.net/~bwatt/ |

Dick I have MaxBlast 3 but I see it's now MaxBlast 4. It also runs in DOS from a diskette and says there must be at least one Maxtor ATA Disk Drive installed in the system for MaxBlast 4 to run but ver 3 says the same thing but it works anyway. No problem in Windows. The download is 1.8 MB. You might want to try it: The URL is long so try this: http://tinyurl.com/ryxov Or www.maxtor.com and click on downloads. Come to think about it one of my drives is a Maxtor. What it complained about was in DOS and about the other drive. But it does the copy anyway. No complaint in Windows. So, I'm not sure ver 4 will work without any Maxtor drives. It's good, I would try it. Ver. 3 does work without any Maxtor drives both in DOS and Windows as I use it to backup a Win2k machine without a Maxtor and have restored with it. Ghost Restore Sets REadOnly Bit
Glad to hear it.
I will be installing a new Win98 system next week Second Edition with all the Updates, and I'll be sure to remember to get that list of default file attributes for you, even create the batch file I was talking about to revert the ones that are supposed to be Read Only back to their proper state. -- Gary S.
