Default Help about win98 compatibility

Hi,

I have a doubt and i hope you can help me. I'm going to upgrade my old pc,
based on a Duron processor with 128+256 mb ram, so i'm going to buy an
Athlon 64 3500+ for socket AM2 and a right motherboard, without substituting
the hard disk. On this pc i have installed win 98, because I have some
programs that only work on it (not on win xp) and so I have now two
operating system installed (win xp and 98). My question is: if i replace
motherboard and CPU, can I continue to use win98? New 64 bit processor are
compatible with win98? I need to install something else (patches), or I just
begin to work only replacing the mobo and the cpu?

Thank you!

I doubt that Windows 98 is going to work on your new hardware. Unless the
motherboard manufacturer has Windows 98 drivers I'd bet it won't.

I can't answer your question definitively, but I seem to remember reading a
press release from AMD saying that their Athlon 64 X2 would support Windows
98. I'm hoping somebody else will confirm this.

When I did something similar, I found the specifications on the AMD website
extremely useful for checking out what did what. http://www.amd.com/us-en/.

Probably will if using the backwards compatible 32bit. Doubt it with 64bit,
especially seeing that drivers/software for 64bit aren't being geared towards 98.

What I do for machines where 98 just won't work natively is to run it inside
a Virtual Machine.

Well, since your not building,,,
I was wondering when this would be mentioned.
Probably got my PEs, VPCs, and VMs mixed, but wasn't there a video limit?
And some other limitations to take into consideration.

Not with the proper Additions installed, I'm only aware of problems with Vista for
a short time on VPC 2004 SP1 until they updated the Additions. VPC Server had better
Additions and no problems with Vista.

Again, since I have no present real ability to run or test these
applications, though others [besides myself] may be interested:

Is the VPC 2004 the/a free version, or not?
What are the minimum requirements, as found by those who have used or tested
VPC?
Did the users/testers make a comparison of VPC to VM?
What were the eventual comparisons/findings?

Thanks for the links, and I'm sure you and others who could discuss this
are busy [and it is the holiday season after all]; just thought that since
this is the holiday break period, those returning after the break with their
new computers, and still wish to run 98, might find a discussion of options,
stumbling blocks, and other, useful.

Wish I could participate or actually provide input, but memory, processor,
and my system, negates that ability.
I can read all I want [and have read some of the articles on VM and VPC],
but for "real world" analysis, setup and the like, from actual users, I find
[monitoring other News Groups and Forums discussing this] this can be
daunting to follow for potential users.
