Hi, It would be hard to say what is the "best" anti-virus software as many things could lead someone to proclaim the brand they use as the best. But, as far as generally known to provide good protection and have a low impact on your system resources, there are a few choices. First, the free ones. Why buy the cow when the milk is free, right? AVG: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php I am currently using it and have installed it on other systems. Does everything it says and I am pleased with it. Avast!: http://www.avast.com/i_idt_153.html Haven't used it but have seen numerous posts in this NG attesting to its worthiness. Pay: The only one I can recommend is EZ Antivirus from Computer Associates. Currently available for a free one-year trial. http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ I have tried Norton and McAfee and didn't like either one. I used EZ for about a year and found it satisfactory overall, although there are some things I didn't like about it. I found no compelling reason to pay $50 for it, that's for sure. Not when there are free alternatives available. Some will boast that it comes with a firewall, and some intimate that it has a version of Zone Alarm's firewall. But, Zone Alarm puts out a free version anyway, so that is not factor worth considering. Not to mention that there are a few other good, free firewalls avaiable. MM |

Bob
Most of us in this Newsgroup use one of the free ones recommended; either AVG or Avast. However if you want to pay a few dollars, then EZ Armour may be the best value Dan "bob" wrote in message ... have just uninstalled norton 2004 anyone got any ideas on what is the best antivirus around. |

That is bad advice. The virus risk predates the www, and you do not have to
install software to get infected. "RJK" wrote: ....never connect to the web, never install software from dubious sources, and you don't need one :-) regards, Richard |

MM I have installed AVG on my Win 98Se desktop and am very satisfied with it and I intend deleting my Norton Anti virus software on my XPlaptop Are there any snags uninstalling Norton AV? Or advice Blair |

If absolutely nobody, ever, bought the "free" ones, they wouldn't stay free
for very long. Shareware, or "try before you buy," software is not intended to be kept and used forever, for free. Software that's placed into the public domain is completely free but, often doesn't come up to the quality of some shareware programs. regards, Richard "Mostly Me (MM)" wrote in message ... bob wrote: have just uninstalled norton 2004 anyone got any ideas on what is the best antivirus around.
