Default Dang Icons! and STUFF

Dear Auntie Virus,

I used McAfee for six years - without incident - until a couple of months
ago when my computer decided it was getting too old and decrepit. McAfee
either took or a dump or my system went on a protest. Either way, I
uninstalled it completely from my computer including removing all leftover
registry keys manually.

Hey, but I'll take you up on that spanking. BFG lol

Trend HouseCall got stuck on processing mode. It never went into scanning
mode. I should have explained that better. The log files had severe errors
in it.

Nothing is checked next to "Active Desktop" or "Arrange Icons".

Smiles,
SGB

P.S. If I had your email address, I would share something with you.

Sweetcheeks.......Trend Housecall is not a downloadable program. It IS
an online scanner. There are several of them. And you deserve a good
spanking for not using an antivirus proggie. OK?? (G)

I happen to use eTrust and like it.....in fact I have used it for about
7 years. So at least we know you do not have the Magistr virus which
causes the icons to move away from the cursor.

Now....be a good girl and follow Heirloom's advice.....what do you have
for a setting for your desktop icons??

WOW! What a waste of time. Trend HouseCall would not download after
two
attempts. Good grief... an unforgettable experience. Downloaded
eTrust's
software. After a longggggggggggg scan...

I do NOT have no stinkin' virus! What I got is a crazed computer.

Now, about those icons, guys???

Whatcha got left in your magic bag, Mighty Mike and Auntie Virus???

Going bonkers! LOL

As Mike said, neither of those programs are an antivirus
program.....they are simply Adware detection.

Try Trend Housecall or Panda or Symantec......any of the online
scanners. Usually if you have a virus you are prevented from
accessing
your resident AV.....which you appear not to have.

I can't believe you don't have one.....does AVG ring a bell?? That
is a
free one you can download at www.grisoft.com Or Avast is OK as
well.
Not to forget EZ Trust has a free one year trial.

Scan first......we will then see if Magistr is what is causing the
problems.

*Auntie Virus*.

Default Dang Icons!

You don't even have "Show Desktop Icons" checked?? Now this is really
getting weird.
Let's get back to the symptoms in detail.....with all foreground apps
closed, just Desktop showing, do your icons show up in different places, are
they moving constantly, are they static and just in a different place than
you left them, do they move around only after opening an application, if so,
a certain app or any?? I know that's a lot of questions, but, I am on a
quest here.

Oh yeah, tell me what you have showing in your Systray and do you still have
Save My Desktop installed?

Nopers, dear Heirloom!

Had that whole Auto Icons instructions the first time in August.

Did a look-see though... there's notta thingy checked. Nor has there ever
been since I have been using computers.

Like to arrange things my way. Looks like I'm loosing though. lol

Ok, let's start again............right click on your desktop, hover your
pointer over "Arrange icons by" and from the slide out menu, tell me
what
you have a checkmark next to. Note: Save My Desktop will NOT work if

you
have Auto Arrange checked!!!.....WinMe and Save My Desktop will be

fighting
for superiority and I have a sneaky suspicion that is where you are.
Heirloom, old and anxiously awaiting your
reply

Default To Heirloom - Dang Icons!

I do - still - have Save My Desktop! installed, but there is no Save My
Desktop! included in Arrange Icons.

Sys Tray: Task Scheduler, Power, Volume, 1-Click Answers, CA Security
Center, Ad-Watch, Wireless LAN Utility, Mail Program
I run many programs using Hotkeys.

My icons moved around like vagabonds. I woke up this morning to see they
took up new residences on my desktop. I do not have to do anything -
sometimes - for them to relocate.

No problems indicated by Belarc Advisor either.

SGB

Default To Heirloom - Dang Icons!

Okay, you need to open Windows Explorer to your main drive, expand Programs
and scroll down to Save My Desktop!, wherever you have it installed. In the
left pane of Windows Explorer, left click once on the Save My Desktop!
folder to highlight it and the right pane should show the included files.
You should see, amongst the files, one called smd.exe and it may have the
SMD icon next to it (depending on how you have WE set up). Anyway, use the
scroll bar, if needed, for the left hand pane, and scroll up to where you
can see "Desktop".....the files for SMD should still be visible in the right
hand pane. Now, using the right handbutton of your mouse, drag the
smd.exe file to the Desktop, release the right mouse button, and from the
menu that pops up, select "Create Shortcut here" by left clicking on it.
You should now have the smd.exe file remaining in the Save My Desktop!
folder and now have a shortcut, complete with icon, on your Desktop.

Now, arrange the icons to your liking, once done, double click the SMD icon
and select "Save icons". I don't recall if there is a confirmation notice
or not. Next, drag an icon, any icon to a different location, reopen SMD
and select "restore icon positions" (or whatever says to move icons
back.....I'm not looking at it)......did the icon you moved go back?

When you say you 'don't have to do anything for them to relocate'.......are
you saying your computer can be unused, with the Desktop showing, and the
icons will rearrange?.....no input activity on your part? Also, under
Desktop Properties, be sure to put a checkmark next to "Show Desktop
Icons"....you previously said there were no checkmarks on that slide out
menu.

I will await the results of the above............and do some further
research in the meantime......it is a quest!
