Recovering Network Neighborhood
I simply want to network two Windows 98SE machines, so that
they can see each other's files and share files/printers. I suddenly observed, while doing my research on this subject, that the network neighborhood icon is not listed on the desktop or in the Control Panel of one of these machines. Any ideas on how I can get it back? As a related question, I have a HP5550 printer connected to my Windows-98SE computer that cannot establish two way communications. I worked with HP in an attempt to resolve this problem without success. Is it possible that the missing Network Neighborhood entry has anything to do with this problem? Just wondering…. Looking forward to any help that will help me find Network Neighborhood. Thanks in advance for any help and/or suggestions passed my way. ----- FYI: I do have Network listed under control panel with the following information under the Configuration tab: Quote: The following network components are installed: Microsoft Family Logon Dial-Up Adapter Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support) Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter NDISWAN - Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support) Add (Tab) Remove (Tab) Properties (Tab) Primary Network Logon: Microsoft Family Logon File and Print Sharing… (Tab) Description Unquote: If I click the Add (Tab) I see the following: Quote: Click the type of network component you want to install: Client Adapter Protocol Service Unquote: |

Recovering Network Neighborhood
Thanks for the quick response.
I do have TweakUI on my system and the Network Neighborhood check box on the Desktop tab is selected. I presently do not have a Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop. I did the Start Run, type: control netcpl.cpl and press Enter action that you suggested. There is no indication of Network Neighborhood listed on the Configuration tab of this window (data that does appear in this window is detailed at the bottom of my first message). I did a find on netcpl.cpl and found the following: Netcpl.cpl C:\Windows\System 15KB Control Panel extension 4/23/99 10:22PM Can you give me some guidance on the extract action. I presume the file that needs to be extracted it netcpl.cpl. Is that correct? Where does the file belong when extracted C:\Windows\System? Is the file that Nctcpl.cpl file that already resides on my system the needed file? If so, how do I make Network Neighborhood appear in the locations where it belongs? Sorry for asking all of these questions. "Brian A." wrote: Did you hide the Network applet using TweakUI on the machine that's missing it? Is the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop? You need to Add Client Add Microsoft:: Client for Microsoft Networks.
Click OK, insert Windows disc if prompted, click OK when done to close the Network control panel, and reboot. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Charles" wrote in message .. . I see you tried TweakUI. Use Regedit and navigate to this key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer\ Look for NoNetHood in the right pane. It should have a value of zero, if it's 1 then the statement is true. Right click NoNetHood and modify and enter a 0 ( zero). Exit and reboot. Be careful with Regedit, there is no Exit Without Saving with Regedit so back it up first. Copy System.dat to a backup folder so you can restore it back to the Windows folder if needed. Or if needed boot to Command Prompt Only and enter Scanreg /restore and restore the earliest Cab file from before you made the change. To Bill and Glen:
Bill, I looked at the registry settings that you identified and the value was already set at 0. Glen, your recommendation worked and all is well. I now have a Network Neighborhood icon on my desktop. Thanks to all for your quick responses. I continue to be amazed at the wealth of knowledge that is displayed on this discussion group. glee wrote: You need to Add Client Add Microsoft:: Client for Microsoft Networks. Recovering Network Neighborhood
Glad to hear you sorted things out. Did you need to use the command in the
Run box to open the network properties? Did you use SFC to Replace the Network applet in CP? If neither, I'd like to know how you got to the properties since you stated that NN wasn't on the desktop and network wasn't in Control Panel. -- Brian A.
