Default Windows Explorer Folder List Missing

When I open up Windows Explorer, I can no longer see my
drives whatnot on the left hand pane that usually allows
me to navigate through my computer. I have run all types
of spy sweeper programs and removed a few viruses with
AVG but it still isnt back to normal. Any idea what
could be causing this? It sounds like a registry problem
to me, but I have no idea what to do. Thanks for your
time

Explorer's Folder View:
This particular problem is usually the result of a damaged IE (usually IE6)
install, often as a result of doing so with Norton or McAfee running at the
time. Yes I do realise you are talking about Windows Explorer rather than
Internet Explorer but the two are linked. May I suggest that you try
repairing IE. Do this using Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and highlight
Microsoft Internet Explorer, click Add/Remove and then on the next screen
select "Repair Internet Explorer" and then OK.

If you don't have an entry for Microsoft Internet Explorer but rather it reads
something like Internet Explorer Q?????? don't worry. This is because you
have installed a cumulative update for Internet Explorer. You will need to
uninstall the update, then go back into Add/Remove Programs, look again for
Microsoft Internet Explorer, repair it and then reinstall the latest
cumulative update.

Thank you for the speedy reply.

I went into add/remove programs to perform your
recommendation, only to find that Microsoft Internet
Explorer is not listed there? I am currently doing a
windows update to see if this fixes the problem. What is
wrong with my IE? I was about to intall IE6a update and
windows update said that there was another installation
of IE currently in process or something and that it had
to restart to continue. God I hate ME. Any other
suggestions? Thanks again.

Did you see the second paragraph of my post?

You may hate Win Me but your problem is with Internet Explorer not Win Me.

I apologize as I failed to read the end of your post. My
error. However, there iw NO entry in add/remove programs
that says internet explorer Q??? or anything resembling
something that would be for internet explorer. I am now
at a total loss. Is there anything I can do through
Windows Setup tab? Thanks again for your time and
patience.

Jamie,

What version of IE are you running? If IE6 I am somewhat surprised that you
have no entry in Add/Remove programs but less so if running IE5.5 however KB
194177 - "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=194177) should hopefully be of some help to
you here.

Towards the end of KB 194177 you will find the following:
"If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if
Internet Explorer 5 (or 5.5 or 6, my addition) is not listed in the Add/Remove
Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer
Repair tool from a command prompt:

1) Click Start, and then click Run.
2) In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

NOTE: This command is case sensitive. "

Please Note that the line beginning rundll32 is a single unbroken line ending
Log.Txt"
