Gmail users
I tried to email a file zipped in WinMe
compressed folders. Btools.exe zipped as Btools.zip Gmail refused to accept it on the ground that this zipped file contains an .EXE file since Gmail does not allow EXE files. Is there anyway to send the EXE files via GMAIL? I thought the Zipped (.ZIP) files are secured files and universally acceptable? |

I thought the Zipped (.ZIP) files are secured files
Not necessarily any more so than any other file. universally acceptable? Not quite sure though what you mean by this. The ZIP format is fairly universal but acceptable is another question entirely. Don't forget that many viruses have been spread in the last year as executable files zipped so as to get past some AV applications, then the next step was to password protect the zip file in a further attempt to escape detection. It would appear that gmail is attempting to protect its users against themselves by blanket banning zipped files containing an exe file. Have you tried renaming the exe file to say Btools.txt and zipping that and telling the recipient that they not only have to unzip but also rename the file? I'm not able to test this for myself at present as it seems I am currently unable to send any mail using gmail from OE due to a "Temporary System Error". I am also currently unable to log on to the gmail web interface. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP AAH wrote: I tried to email a file zipped in WinMe compressed folders. In the body of the email inform the recipient that they need to rename the file back to BTOOLS.EXE after unzipping. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C. Hi Mike
I have just done the test for you. I tried to send an email with an .exe attachment, Gmail would not allow it to be sent. I then renamed the file to xxxx.txt and zipped it, this I sent to myself, (using Gmail) no trouble. When I received the file, I renamed it to xxxx.exe. Hope this answers your theory! BTW - I have just performed the same test using my pop3 mail account (ntlworld) and can send and receive .exe files without let or hindrance! Oddly enough, I ran into the same problem yesterday when sending a zipped
*.exe to a friend. GMail does not like them and bounced them back to me. I finally sent it zipped to her regular address. I suppose this feature has its good points, but it was a tad aggravating at the time. It definitely was not malware, grin. Cheers.....Heather "Mike M" wrote in message ... Viruses are transmitted through several vectors which include things like .exe's, .bat's, .vbs's, etc. G-mail is trying to avoid carrying them. You can't get a virus from a .txt by clicking on it. Thanks all of you.
It does work by changing it to .TXT ext.. "AAH" wrote in message ... I tried to email a file zipped in WinMe compressed folders. Thanks George,
I thought that all that was required was to change the extension from exe to txt. I also wonder what gmail would do if a zipped exe file is password protected. No Mike,
Can't send a password protected zipped .exe file via Gmail!
