TMP Files
MSVIP's;
I just came across a "TMP Folder" in C:/Windows containing about 576 files ranging from 1KB to 32KB. Is this another one of those things everyone knows about but me? What are they for? Can/should some of them be deleted? rooster |

That sounds like a temporary file folder that you probably don't need. You
can try renaming it (eg, to TMP.OLD) and wait a week or so to see if you get any complaints. When it is confirmed that the files are not being access by any application you can delete the folder. Your genuine temporary folder is usually \Windows\Temp. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (DTS) "rooster" wrote in message ... What is the exact spelling of the folder, and the exact path?
Is it C:\Windows\TMP as you posted, or is it C:\Windows\Temp? The contents of the Temp folder can be deleted after at least one reboot. If the folder has another name, you must first determine what app is using it. Click Start Menu Programs MS-DOS Prompt, type: SET and press Enter. Your search parameters make the results fairly meaningless. By searching for the
words TMP FILES, it will come up with every file and folder that contains the word TMP or the word FILES. Your search has nothing to do with finding actual temporary files. This is how people end up in a situation of destroying their system....by deleting files that they *think* are not needed. Temporary files do not generally include the word or extension, TMP, anyway. Find your actual Temp folder (usually C:\Windows\Temp) by using the SET command I gave you. Files in that folder can be deleted after a reboot. Leave the rest alone. :-) Here is my canned reply to questions about deleting temporary files: Reboot. Open the Temp folder and delete all Temp files: -Click StartRun, type %temp% and click OK. -Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete. Delete the Temporary Internet Files: Click Start Settings Control Panel Internet Options General tab. Click the Delete Files button, then put a checkmark in the box to Delete all offline content, and click OK, and OK. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "rooster" wrote in message ... -----Original Message----- What is the exact spelling of the folder, and the exact path? No you didn't. Your reply to Glee implies ALL folders in the C: partition.
Files with an extension name of "tmp" can usually be safely deleted. ZoneAlarm (firewall) maintains one such named file in the C:\windows\temp directory that you cannot delete if its in use. ZA will recreate it upon next boot if its deleted. Caution is required here, so more specific info is needed. I would just drag them into the recycle bin temporarily for a week or so. Be sure you use all your installed programs during that time period. If no protest is noted about lack of .tmp file, empty the recycle bin. "rooster" wrote in message ...
