Default no start button

After scandisk, no start button ever appears. How do I correct that? I just
upgraded from 98 to ME a few weeks ago and it was working fine. Machine also
tends to hang during scandisk. I used the boot disk and ran scandisk that
way and tried editing the msdos.sys file (autoscan=0), but the system still
wants to run scandisk on start up. Do I need to reinstall ME? Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Machine is 533 mgz processor with
256 mb or ram.
