sound not playing on headphones but on speakers
A friend repaired my computer recently and I have no clue
what they did really. My speakers work fine but the headphones are not playing through the jack in the front. It's an e machine and I've fiddled around with the audio properties and volume control. Any info or place I can get this info would be greatly appreciated! help! |

Not sure of the specific machine, but if by "but the headphones are not
playing through the jack in the front" you mean the headphone socket on the front of the CD-ROM, then you should have a small 'volume control' thumb-wheel adjacent to it to adjust the sound. Not only is this socket and control quite independent of the "audio properties and volume control" but is also independent of the computer's sound card and works ONLY with audio CD's. Confused
Do you have your PC configured for digital playback? Your headphones won't work if you have digital playback enabled in the Device Manager & WMP as digital playback inhibits analogue playback which is required to hear audio through the headphones. For details see MS KB 277653 - "Cannot Hear Audio Through Your Headphones When Connected to CD-ROM" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=277653) and also the linked KB 271647. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP confused wrote: A friend repaired my computer recently and I have no clue what they did really. Forgive me. I didn't mean the one attached to the cd rom.
Its on the lower part of the tower. It's right below the mic socket. It played before. I don't know when it stopped working but I just noticed it. The type is a X86 based pc. The model is a Whitney System cr board. It says a "problem device in my system info is an irq something... error code 22. I dont know how much help that is. Forgive me, I am an idiot. -----Original Message----- Not sure of the specific machine, but if by "but the headphones are not playing through the jack in the front" you mean the headphone socket on the front of the CD-ROM, then you should have a small 'volume control' thumb-wheel adjacent to it to adjust the sound. The error code 22 isn't the problem but might suggest that you have made some
other hardware change. Is it possible that you have swapped some cards around in the PC or even opened the case and the cable from the socket on the front face connecting it to either your motherboard or sound card has become dislodged? Error Code 22: See MS KB 272291 - "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering" Problem Device Entry in System Information Tool" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=272291) where you will find it stated that what you are seeing is "by design". This message is often the result of having changed the layout of your PCI cards or following the removal of a card. Forget about this "error" as it is unlikely to have an effect and is simply indicating that the place holder previously used is no longer required. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Confused wrote: Forgive me. Confused - Maybe, Idiot - No!! g
From here, it seems that your sound card drivers may be 'damaged' or corrupted or not installed properly - maybe as a result of your previous 'repair' OK, chances are that the soundcard needs re-installing. You *could* go back to the person who 'repaired' your computer and get him to fix it properly g However, the 'standard' course of action is as follows:- Boot into Safe Mode (e.g. Press and hold the Shift key from a COLD boot - i.e a power switch-on) Cancel the Help Centre. Right-Click the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties and choose Device Manager. Look for ALL occurrences of Sound Cards (including games controllers) and 'Remove' them all in Device Manager. Shut down and re-boot (cold boot) your computer into Normal Mode (boot normally) and WinMe should re-detect your sound card and attempt to install the correct drivers. N.B Ensure that you have the latest WinMe drivers for your card (as supplied with your PC) - or check the card manufactures web site and download them if necessary - direct the setup wizard to the location of the 'new drivers' All being well the 'phones socket should work again. If not come back and somebody will try to help you further. Mart "Confused" wrote in message ... Forgive me. I didn't mean the one attached to the cd rom. Its on the lower part of the tower.
