Lost Posts
After reading some posts, I save those posts in this newsgroup. I only have
a chance to get to this newsgroup every two or three months. When I go to "Synchronize Newsgroup" to get new headers & "Get messages marked for download", I lose ALL old messages I had in the newsgroup. How can I make sure I keep the messages I wanted to keep & messages marked for download ? Thanks. |

The servers don't keep messages forever, though they do keep them for a
few months. One thing you should do is go into OptionsMaintenance tab, and disable the "Compact Messages in the background" option. To keep messages that have already been downloaded, drag them to a local folder (right-click on "Local Folders" and create a new one, calling it something like "Keepers".) As for messages that you've marked for download, if the messages are no longer on the server, there's nothing you can do about it. Otherwise, disabling that background compaction should prevent them from being deleted. If you want to try and go back to look for messages, you'll need to Reset the NG. -- Gary S. Tools Options Maintanance (tab) Increase the "Delete news messages "X" number of days after being downloaded". I've set my at 500 days. That used to happen to me when I'd go to a group I hadn't visited in a while. ALL messages, including already downloaded/read messages would scroll off the screen into oblivion.. |

Easier and better to just disable it altogether, Bill. It's know to
cause other problems, too. Instead, I make a Message Rule that deletes messages that are more than 30, 60 or 90 days old, depending on the NG. Part of my weekly maintenance is to Synchronize All (I have all groups set to download entire messages when synchronizing,) then Work Offline, then apply the rule, then compact all folders. -- Gary S. (1) At "OE, Tools menu, Message Rules, News", create a Message Rule to
delete posts older than, say, 90 days. Also check "stop processing more rules". (2) At "Tools, Options, Read tab", uncheck "Get xxx headers at a time". (3) R-Clk the NG in the left pane, Synchronize Settings, set to All Messages. (4) Click "Tools, Synchronize Newsgroup" Posts older than 90 days will not download. Posts that age on your machine after the download are your responsibility to delete, by occasionally going to that rule & clicking "Apply Now". After that, compact: "OE, File menu, Folder, Compact all folders". Colorado disagrees, but there is a cave-dwelling MVP around, who says... (1) "OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab". (2) Uncheck "Delete news messages x days after being downloaded". (3) Uncheck "Compact messages in the background". -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Big Al" wrote in message ... | After reading some posts, I save those posts in this newsgroup. Do people really read messages that old in this day and age??? If I've been away from an active ng like this one for any length of time, I only retrieve messages for 3 days at the most. Nothing is more lame than posting to a long dead thread. |

I keep posts that long for many reasons. In this group, it's 60 days.
There are many issues that we deal with here that span that kind of time, and keeping them allows me to refer back to answers I remember someone else giving. I don't mean individual threads, I'm talking about issues, like the KB891711 issue, for instance. On the other hand, some threads can easily last more than a month. I don't answer old messages, but I do use them for reference. -- Gary S. Having similar problem with Outlook's version of the MS newsreader. And, it
only occurs with the windowsxp general newsgroup. Even though reply posts I made there are color-marked on the left side of the originating post, they never show up the following day. All settings are the same on all the MS newsgroups I read. "Big Al" wrote in message ... After reading some posts, I save those posts in this newsgroup. Outlook uses Outlook Express as its newsreader. The difference between
the XP newsgroups and all the others could simply be due to that NG getting a *lot* more traffic than most. What *are* the settings? And what do you mean they are "color-marked"? Can you describe that effect in more detail? -- Gary S. Just to add to that, there are many technical groups on usenet that
don't have close to the traffic that a lot of the microsoft groups do, so a years worth of posts is not really that much. Usenet's a good reference tool. Not necessarily soemthing you need to respond to. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... I keep posts that long for many reasons. In this group, it's 60 days.
