Default no sound (original ain't it!!)

I need a real expert here please.

My wife needs to listen to CD's sent to her from an online
univerity coarse. they are audio/visual tutorials.

We are on windows 98se

A breif history of past events are :-

Sound not working around 18 months ago (not sure how long
before this it had stopped)

Computer crashed several times around a year ago, acouple
of times I reloaded from a windows 98se disc, and once the
computer was taken to an IT company who remotely removed a
virus and may or may not have reloaded windows

When returned from the IT company the scanner would not
scan and we could not burn any CD's any more.

When the sound first stopped working (before the crash I
think) with the help of an IT friend we could not find the
fault and ended up fitting a new plug-in sound card and
obviously loaded in the software and drivers, WE HAD SOUND
ONCE AGAIN!!!! not sure what card it is but can find out.

The original sound card was a "onboard" thingy

A month or so ago the sound stopped working, after
investigating with the help of my IT friend, trying the
obviuos first, one or two items where deleted from device
manager one of which had a "yellow!!" next to it and at
least one had a black cross next to it.

Hunting around the computer for a clue was derected
to "A.S.D - the programme that reinstalls programmes that
had previously been causing problems and stopped from
loading - There was two items on the list and both were
reinstalled. WONDERFULL, HAD SOUND AGAIN!!!!

Sound included beeps and bings from desktop etc, the voice
from AOL and from the wifes CD's don't know about any
other.

THEN, alas, two days later no sound at all, except when I
go into messenger and use the audio set up to test the
speakers then the required sound comes out of the speaker
( the speakers are on the NEC moniter as a built in
thingy ) Dont know if we would get sound from a messenger
online chat though.

My IT friend considers that if we get "ANY" sound at all
then the sound card is working!!

But it ain't

Please help!!!

Steve

I'de say they reinstalled Windows.

The problem could be that the onboard sound card is
conflicting with the new plug in one. If you know how,
follow the instructions in the manual and go into BIOS and
see if the onboard sound is disabled. ARe there still
icons with yellow !'s on them in Device Manager?

HI, thanks for picking it up

No there are no yellow!!'s in device manager Not since I
did the A.S.D the other week
There was one listing with a black cross next to it which
I have just bit the bullet and re-enabled it (don't know
what it is for)Don't think it helped.

However, although I had already been into "setup" - (press
del at start-up) with the advice of my IT friend,he did
not specifiey exactly where "just in bios" as you know
there is cmos and bios and others, so not knowing which
one I had a hunt around and found "onboard legacy audio in
intergrated peripherals - this I disabled but it did not
cure the problem (is still disabled now)(sound blaster and
others were greyed out also)

After reading your reply with the same advice, I had
another hunt and found "onchip sound" in advanced chipset
in set-up or what you experts term as "BIOS" I disabled
the listing and Halaluya I have sound once again.

Not entirely sure if it was the cross in device manager or
the disable in bios But My money is on the bios thingy.

Thank you so much for your guideance, Will post again with
your attention if sound departs again

How are you with canon scanners and cd burners, let me
know if interested

Cheers Steve from near STONEHENGE!!

It was the BIOS (or CMOS; or whatever you want to call it)
setting. The pc wasn't sure which sound card to use, the
onboard or plugin.
