Configuring w98 se to save to cd-rw
Just installed Quicken 2005 and would like to save my files to my CD-r drive
but it does not reconize it. What do I need to do to resolve this so I may save my info to the cd-r in E drive? It's a CenDyne drive I put in a year or so ago. |

Ernie,
Win98, unlike WinXP, does not include the program to burn CD-R/RW. So you have to install the program like Nero, or EasyCD Creator (there are another programs, too) -- most likely you'll find it on CD that came with your CD-R drive. Using any of the program like these, you have to prepare your data to burn CD: you can't use "File -- Save" in menu of any program. But there are the additional separate programs (like Nero InCD) which allow to use CD-RW (but not CD-R!) like the "big diskette", so you can work with CD-RWs as if you work with the small standard HDDs. -- Mikhail Zhilin http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. (Hi Mikhail!)

Thanks to both for you help with my question. I do have Nero InCD installed.
I had thought being I was using Quicken version 99 that it didn't know that CD burners existed. I got this computer in 99. So I upgrade to 2005 believing it would solve my problem. When I saw it didn't this afternoon I hope I could find someone to help. Your answered that. I had been thinking of trying to save it from my C: drive by going to the files in the Quicken folder but wasn't sure of that angle. I now am going to save them to C: with the date added each time. Then copy them to the CD thur Nero. You've make me feel it can work. Thanks again. It means alot knowing I have your help out there. Merry Christmas to you both. Ernie "Gary S. Hi Gary -- and Merry Holidays and Happy New Year to you and yours! s
Yes, I agree -- and as minimum UDF-reader or similar has to be installed at computers with Win9x/ME (WinXP can read these disks with no external programs). And had to mention that direct writing is less safe than the usual burning. - To Ernie: Glad our answers were useful for you. And in addition -- taking into account that CD-R disks are cheaper than the diskettes now (I use high quality, though non world-wide brand name, 700MB CD-Rs, which cost in Moscow about $30 per 100-disks pack) -- I came to the conclusion, that it is reasonable to use CD-RW disks for the experiments only (say, when you make your first steps with the burning program) or for the specific tasks -- and use CD-Rs for the usual tasks. And you can keep the outdated archives (say, 2 latest of them) -- sometimes they become very useful. Merry Christmas to you, too! -- Mikhail Zhilin http://www.aha.ru/~mwz Sorry, no technical support by e-mail. Please reply to the newsgroups only. ====== On Sat, 25 Dec 2004 16:33:23 -0800, "Gary S. Ernie Quicken saves its data in the quicken folder. The backup selection in Quicken simply copies the appropriate files to the location of your choice. Copying these files to another location on the "C:" partition is simply duplicating what's on that partition to begin with. INCD and other such programs create a UDF filesystem for the target cdrw. If the application you're using needs to backup to that target cdrw, as long as the application works using windows explorer to move/copy/read files, it will work okay. You should create a long term archive of your Quicken data in ISO 9660 format to cd or cdrw. This can be read in windows or dos like any other data CD without use of a helper application like INCD.
