Default Video Adapter on Dell Inspiron Laptop stopped working

I was changing the refresh rate on the video adapter. NeoMagic256ZD and
when it was set to the highest rate the monitor and laptop blacked out.

When I rebooted it said the adapter was set up wrong. It displays as the
minimum and cannot be reset to 1028x840

The drivers look ok.
Is it possible there is a registry setting than has to be corrected.

TIA
Bob

Restart in Safe Mode:
- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

In Safe Mode, open Control Panel Display Settings Advanced Monitor tab, and
lower the Refresh Rate to adapter default or 60Hz, click OK. In Settings, change
the screen resolution and color to one of the lower settings, click Apply/OK.

Restart Windows in normal mode, and you should be able to reset your display
settings.

Thanks for the response.
I had done that already but was never given the opportunity to switch to
60mhz.
What I did do was delete the hardware via the Control Panel Display
SettingsSystem.
When I rebooted it found the new hardware and reinstalled the needed
software. The system is now fine. (I have access to the refresh rates)

Yeah, after I posted that I realised that you probably would not be able to adjust
the refresh rate in Safe Mode.

Glad you figured out the reasonable alternative.
