Default Live CD?

Hi,
Is it possible to run windows 98 from a CD? I want to install 98 but
I don't want to have to re-install windows XP.

AFAIK, I would have to install 98 to a hard drive and then copy the
files to a cd, but what I need to know is if this would work or not?

Better yet, is their a Live CD version of Windows 98?
I doubt it, but this would be a much easier solution.

I very much doubt it.

Look into installing 98 to a seperate partition and using a boot manager to
choose which OS to boot. .

Even if you could get it to boot, which I doubt,, the OS needs to write to the volume \
(paging file, %temp%, the free space count in the boot sector, to name a few).

MS Virtual PC or VMware might be better options if you're needing 98 for testing purposes

No.

Then just install Win98 on another hard drive,
and mount both hard drives on removable racks.

Before you power up, just mount the drive
with the OS that you want to run.

I've made this work well if XP is on the first partition and the boot
manager can move the drive letters around. I did not make it work with
XP NOT on the first partition...but maybe that's just me.
Pluggable hard drives work well too. But you have to make sure you have
the versions with the 80-wire cable all the way thru. I've had random
problems
with the big fast DMA 100 disks mounted in 40-wire caddies.

I have never tried this idea but the author of the web site says it can be
done.

It may be doable, but it would be terribly slow. The swapfile would have to
be reassigned to a physical hard drive. Nothing could be changed, removed
or added.

A 3rd party boot manager that hides other OS partitions would work if you
have room for another partition. As would a removable hard drive tray as
another solution/

I think the way the swap file is handled is to create a ram drive.

I don't see that a CD system would be very useful and Dave's other
suggestions would work better. Although it is quite pricey, another option
is MS Virtual PC. This program installs in XP (or another system) and then
W98 (or another system) is installed in it. Then when W98 is needed,
Virtual PC is started and W98 can run at the same time as XP is running.
