Hidden program
How do I detect and remove a program that is
intermittently running in the background and slowing my PC down? I cannot find it anywhere, but I can hear it every few minutes.

A process monitor will allow you to see all processes (not just programs) in
real time. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../procexp.shtml Just because you can hear it doesn't mean that there is a program running.
