File sharing between win98 and winxp problem
I have read the other posts on or near this subject .. I think mine is just
a little different as follows: I have a new Windowsxp computer and want to be able to transfer files files from my old Win98 computer and also to share a printer. I have a D-link hub which is used to connect both computers to the internet thru a cable modem. Both computers can access the internet at the same time with no problems, but I can't get them to recognise each other. I used the Network Setup Wizard on the Winxp computer to set up the network and used the disk it created in the Win98 computer to set up the network on it. Each computer sees itself in the network neighbourhood area on its own Computer but cannot see the other computer. I have used this method before between the Win98/Win95 computers and it worked, so I know that the D-link hub and cable modem connection works. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Abay |

The problem is the hub. Since each computer is going directly to your ISP
for an IP address, they're almost surely being assigned addresses that can't see each other - and are fully exposed on the Internet to any passing hacker, cracker or bad guy. The solution is to get a router and hook both computers up to the router, then to the cable modem. -- Richard G. I understand what you are saying, but this set up worked with win95 and w98
computers .. also the D-lin hub is also called a d-link router ... I'm just trying to not spend $ if I don't have to ... also this is just for the time it takes to get the data over to the new computer. Many thanks for your reply Abay "Richard G. If it's a router then that's different from a hub, and should work, since
it's what I recommended. :-) Let's start with the basics - what IP address does each computer have? Can they ping each other? -- Richard G.
