Since I Reinstalled windows98SE it takes forever to
download something. Things that used to take only minutes take nearly an hour, and some pages with alot of info on them never upload at all. I also tried downloading msn toolbar and i cannot seem to get it to work i keep getting an error message. What could be the problem? -marie |

Please provide the exact error messages, and when they occur. If you get an
"illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and post back with the exact details word for word, up to but not including the memory registers. Click StartRun, type MSINFO32 and click OK. In the left pane of the System Information window, click the + sign to expand the "Software Environment" category. In the left pane, click to select "Startup Programs"....they will appear in a list on the right. Press Ctrl-A on the keyboard, which will highlight everything in the list on the right. Press Ctrl-C to copy the list to the 'clipboard'. Open a reply to this message, click in the body of the message and press Ctrl-V to paste the list from the clipboard to the message, and post back to this thread. Also, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager and post back with what is listed there when you experience the slowdown. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Marie" wrote in message ... I downloaded/ran/installed nearly everything you posted
links to and each said my system is clean and no viruses were detected so i'm not sure if i should go about removing it manually or if i should just leave it alone?? I did download spybot and that cleaned up a few things. But i am still confused as to why i cannot download the MSN toolbar. I disabled my Nview on my desktop and tried once again to download it and yet again it does not show up. I really liked the toolbar because it stopped alot of popup ads. :-) I'm not saying I'm right, either, Marie. :-) I have had no personal run-ins
with winupd.exe myself, but everything I can find about it says malware. Install, update, and run AVG anti-virus...scan the entire system. Then, run Hijack This as previously explained, and post the log file at this forum: http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 Read the "pre-posting" instructions on that site prior to posting the log, and post the log along with this info: (1) what problem you are attempting to solve and (2) what you have already done to attempt to solve it. The experts there will be able to tell you for sure what to do. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Marie" wrote in message ... I suggest you install an anti-virus app immediately, update it to the current virus definition files, and do a scan of you whole system. This one is free - AVG Free Edition: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm wrote in message ... I downloaded/ran/installed nearly everything you posted links to and each said my system is clean and no viruses were detected so i'm not sure if i should go about removing it manually or if i should just leave it alone?? I did download spybot and that cleaned up a few things. But i am still confused as to why i cannot download the MSN toolbar. I disabled my Nview on my desktop and tried once again to download it and yet again it does not show up. I really liked the toolbar because it stopped alot of popup ads. Marie -----Original Message----- NVIEW.dll is a support file for your NVidia display (video) adapter. winupd.exe is either a virus, or a dialer....installing a firewall does not protect you from viruses or trojans in any way. Use one of these online scanners, until you install an anti-virus: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Scanners.htm Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations: http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar). Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Well when i try to download the tool bar i get this : mtbs has performed an illegal operation and will close. Details: MTBS has performed an error in relation to module NVIEW.DLL op0167:1005be61. I'm not really sure what Nview is so i wont be touching that yet! When i hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete not too many strange applications are running except i noticed that Rundll32 is listed twice, and if i try to stop one from running everything just freezes up. Marie -----Original Message----- Please provide the exact error messages, and when they occur. If you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and post back with the exact details word for word, up to but not including the memory registers.
