Default COM ports and DOS programs

I am trying to connect a ST-150 Nuclear Lab Station to a Windows 98 second ed
machine. The devices connects to the PC via a serial cable. The software
that runs the lab station is a PC emulation DOS program that can run with or
without Windows.

The problem is that the program is not communicating with either of my com
ports (1 or 2). The program has an option to check the connection via a
Serial Relink but this does not work. I have checked all my com ports and
Device Manager reports that there are no conflicts and the device is working
properly.

I also ran setup at boot up and confirmed that the com ports were set to
default and they were.

The funny thing is that the lab station and software all work fine when I
installed it on a winxp machine. In order for the system to work in winxp i
had to configure the compatability to run the program in win98/me mode with
256K colors and 640x480 resolution. But I can't get the system to run on a
win98 machine?

Any suggestions for resolving this dos program's com port problem would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for your timely response but I have read through the manual, more
than I would have like to. I followed the instructions and have used the
software provided to it's extent. I looked at their website for some further
help but I could only send an email.

I think the problem is due to some settings in win98 and/or in dos because
the lab station works on another computer running winxp (see my first post).

Sometimes the program does not ask which com port to use. When this
happened I used the Serial Relink option and nothing happened. Another time
the program did ask which com port but did not find it.

Thank you again for your timely response.

Just to be sure, check the BIOS to see that the COM ports are enabled.
Can't say for sure if it would help but HP has a BIOS update for that =
model machine.
If you have a firewall make sure it's not blocking the port.
Make sure no pins are bent on the serial cable or try a different one if =
this is not on a dual boot machine.

I verified that the com ports were enabled in BIOS and reinstalling them in
windows and the lab station still didn't work. It was at this time that it
finally dawned on me to try another lab station and guess what. That
particular lab station has a faulty serial connection so I learned a good
lesson this time. Thank you again for taking your time to help me with this
problem.

Glad to hear all is well. You'd would think them to pull the bad =

bad version already.
Curious. Is the one running on XP the same one that wouldn't run on 98 =
